In particular, its multifaceted showcase of African fashion, music and dance are exquisite, and throwaway jokes (like the Soul Glo TV spot) remain quotable to this day.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, many critics dismissed the movie as a trite fairy tale at the time, failing to grasp the radical novelty that Zamunda represented to Black audiences. Thirty years later, they wouldn\u2019t dare make the same mistake with \u201cBlack Panther,\u201d recognizing that film\u2019s exuberant Afrocentrism as what set it apart from other Marvel <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a>. But Eddie Murphy got there first, and now, in the golden years of the Golden Child\u2019s career, the comic is cashing in once again (the irony being that \u201cComing to America\u201d was the $288 million blockbuster that, per \u201cHollywood accounting,\u201d famously lost money \u2014 or so Paramount argued when Art Buchwald sued the studio for his share).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the world has changed a great deal since Akeem first came to America, but as far as Amazon Studios\u2019 21st-century sequel is concerned, Zamunda has remained more or less frozen in time \u2014 to the extent that half the jokes are simply repeats of beloved gags from the original film. That\u2019s by far the easiest path that Murphy and company could have taken with \u201cComing 2 America,\u201d and while fans may <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>reciate that director Craig Brewer (\u201cDolemite Is My Name\u201d) hasn\u2019t messed with the formula, the movie feels downright lazy on the heels of, say, the take-no-prisoners satire of \u201cBorat Subsequent Moviefilm,\u201d which Amazon released last year.<\/p>\n<p>As the film opens, the great James Earl Jones is still supreme ruler of Zamunda, though not for long. Sensing that the end is near, King Jaffe Joffer tries to ensure a successful transfer of power to his son Akeem under the country\u2019s old-school patrilineal system. The problem: Akeem and wife Lisa (Shari Headley) have three daughters but no male heir \u2014 or so they thought.<\/p>\n<p>A new character named Baba (Arsenio Hall, disguised to look like a haggard voodoo priestess) shares a vision, in which we learn that a forgotten tryst during his long-ago <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> to New York left behind an illegitimate son. Now, if only Akeem and best friend Simmi (Hall) can locate Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler) \u2014 which will require another trip to Queens, N.Y., obviously \u2014 they should be able to prevent Zamunda from falling into the hands of local warlord <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Izzi (Wesley Snipes).<\/p>\n<p>This time, Akeem doesn\u2019t come to America for long, which is kind of a shame, since the earlier film\u2019s most entertaining scenes were the ones in which the pampered African ruler seemed to find some kind of bohemian charm in egregious <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> injustices \u2014 a sly way of pointing out race and class disparities in a nation that sees itself as the most advanced on Earth. There ought to be enormous potential in how a post-Obama America appears to Akeem, although his visit is brisk and disappointingly superficial.<\/p>\n<p>For the most part, \u201cComing 2 America\u201d falls back on familiar punchlines, serving up nearly word-for-word repeats of amusing bits from the original, but they don\u2019t necessarily play the same in this context: Take McDowell\u2019s (the movie\u2019s ghetto McDonald\u2019s knockoff) out of Queens, and the underlying parody loses its relevance \u2014 although it is amusing to see a Black \u201cRonald McDowell\u201d mascot at the Zamundan joint. The sequel\u2019s sense of humor has evolved so little over three decades that musical numbers by En Vogue and Gladys Knight transport audiences back to the late \u201980s, when a movie like \u201cWorking Girl\u201d represented the cutting edge of gender politics.<\/p>\n<p>Had Akeem stayed in Zamunda, he would have been obliged to submit to an arranged marriage. His idea of a progressive response at the time was \u201cI want a woman that\u2019s going to arouse my intellect as well as my loins!\u201d Looking back, the treatment of women was one area where \u201cComing to America\u201d can seem particularly cringe-worthy, and the sequel\u2019s main innovation \u2014 challenging the assumption that Akeem needs a male successor at all \u2014 hardly feels earth-shattering.<\/p>\n<p>That said, Leslie Jones (who plays Akeem\u2019s outspoken baby mama, Mary) makes her presence felt in a way that the movie\u2019s other largely one-dimensional women don\u2019t dare, wresting some of the more retrograde gags away from the boys (as when she gets her own \u201croyal bather\u201d scene). Still, it\u2019s a shame that screenwriters Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield didn\u2019t strive to come up with fresh material, rather than working so hard to find ways to recycle fans\u2019 favorite bits, which often means straining for excuses to revisit side characters.<\/p>\n<p>Moviegoers didn\u2019t realize it at the time, but the original \u201cComing to America\u201d marked the beginning of a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>-changing collaboration between Murphy and makeup artist Rick Baker that would later make the full-body transformations of \u201cThe Nutty Professor\u201d and \u201cNorbit\u201d possible. Baker had innovated the creature effects for John Landis\u2019 \u201cAn American Werewolf in London,\u201d and the director brought him on to do the prosthetics that would allow Murphy and Hall to disappear into half a dozen loony cameos \u2014 many of whom audiences didn\u2019t recognize until the end credits.<\/p>\n<p>Baker has since retired, but the schtick lives on, as \u201cComing 2 America\u201d revives each and every one of those alter egos, from the My-T Sharp barbershop trio (Clarence, Morris and whiteface Jewish regular Saul) to Jheri-curled Sexual Chocolate lead singer Randy Watson. Today, visual effects add another tool to Murphy\u2019s arsenal, allowing him and Hall to go back and play themselves at a younger age in CG-enhanced flashbacks that look convincing enough via streaming (the way Amazon is releasing the film), but might not have held up on the big screen.<\/p>\n<p>In Siskel and Ebert\u2019s 1988 review of the original, the two critics debated whether Murphy had lost his edge in this role, and sure enough, \u201cComing to America\u201d marked another turning point for a standup associated with his hard-R sense of humor (\u201cRaw\u201d came out the year before): The movie represented a far-milder Murphy than audiences had seen. These days, the comedian\u2019s perhaps better known for family fare like \u201cDr. Dolittle\u201d and \u201cShrek,\u201d and Amazon has diluted the franchise just enough to clear a PG-13 rating \u2014 although perhaps it\u2019s the MPAA that\u2019s changed, letting a tasteless ritual circumcision sequence slide.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s the relatively good-taste elements that have made \u201cComing to America\u201d a classic. The costumes alone are exquisite (\u201cBlack Panther\u201d designer Ruth E. Carter took over sartorial duties from Deborah Nadoolman, adding amusing details, like Puma logos, to her stunning dashikis), and suggest that the below-the-line departments recognize what Brewer and the screenwriters did not \u2014 namely, that it\u2019s the African side of \u201cComing 2 America\u201d that resonates with audiences.
