The\u00a0Searching<\/em> <\/strong>sequel may have just found one of its cast members: Storm Reid<\/strong>. The\u00a0Wrinkle in Time<\/em> and\u00a0Invisible Man<\/em> actress is in negotiations to join the follow-up film being directed by\u00a0Will Merrick<\/strong> and Nick Johnson<\/strong>. The movie is not a direct sequel to the excellent 2018 \u201cScreenlife\u201d (that is, a movie that takes place entirely on screens, be it smartphones, computers, or TVs) thriller starring John Cho, but will involve similar elements.\u00a0Aneesh Chaganty<\/strong> and Sev Ohanian<\/strong>, who wrote the first film, wrote the treatment for the sequel, and Merrik and Johnson are penning the script<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Deadline has the news<\/a> that Storm Reid is in talks to join the\u00a0Searching<\/em> sequel cast. We have no idea who she\u2019s playing, and we don\u2019t even know what the plot will be. But if the sequel is following the first film, there\u2019s a good chance Reid is playing the character who goes missing, and then someone has to find her. Then again, the sequel could be completely subverting things, and this time an adult goes missing and a younger person is searching for them.
\nThe original Searching<\/em>, released in 2019, is one of those films that takes place entirely on screens (think\u00a0Unfriended<\/em>). And while that almost always sounds like a bad idea to me,\u00a0Searching<\/em> was pretty damn great. In the first movie, \u201cDavid Kim becomes desperate when his 16-year-old daughter, Margot, disappears and an immedia<\/a>te police investigation leads nowhere. He soon decides to search the one place that no one else has: Margot\u2019s laptop. Hoping to trace her digital footprints, David contacts her friends and looks at photos and videos for any possible clues to her whereabouts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sequel will not bring David Kim or (presumably) any of the other characters. Instead, original\u00a0Searching<\/em> director\u00a0Aneesh Chaganty said on social media<\/a> that\u00a0\u201cthe story will not follow the same characters or plotline as the first. Most importantly, we see this as an opportunity to tell another original, tech-driven thriller. If we can do that AND help bring new faces\/voices to the industry, bonus points.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chaganty isn\u2019t directing the follow-up, but he and\u00a0Searching<\/em> co-writer\u00a0Sev Ohanian did write the treatment for the script. Taking over directorial duties are\u00a0Will Merrick and Nick Johnson, the team that edited the first film. They\u2019re also writing the script from Chaganty and Ohanian\u2019s script. When \/Film interviewed Chaganty and producer\u00a0Natalie Qasabian<\/strong> about their recent film\u00a0Run<\/em>, the subject of\u00a0Searching 2<\/em> (or whatever it\u2019s going to be called) came up. \u201cWe\u2019re very excited to say that it\u2019s heavily in progress,\u201d\u00a0Qasabian said at the time. \u201cI think we can say this. Because of the pandemic, we\u2019ve sort of pushed the shoot, but, like the first movie, we\u2019re spending a lot of time pre-vizing the whole movie out, and we\u2019re deep into that process right now. We have seen portions of the movie and we\u2019re very, very excited for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
