Disney holds monthly meetings to determine what content in its archive needs to have a warning added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The meetings are held virtually and are \u201cvery raw\u201d according to one attendee.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had some very raw conversations on those Zooms,\u201d African American Film Critics Association President Gil Robertson told the Hollywood Reporter. As part of Disney\u2019s Stories Matter initiative\u2019s advisory council, Robertson and his colleagues watch films believed to possibly be problematic and then tell Disney their reaction.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want to make up for any offensive messaging they may have been a part of,\u201d Robertson told the publication. \u201cIt feels sincere, and it\u2019s also good business.\u201d<\/p>\n

In November 2019, when Disney launched its Disney+ streaming service, the company added content warnings ahead of its animated classics \u201cDumbo\u201d (1941), \u201cThe Jungle Book\u201d (1967) and \u201cAladdin\u201d (1992) to warn audiences that the movies<\/a> \u201cmay contain outdated cultural depictions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The iconic films \u201cAristocats\u201d (1970), \u201cPeter Pan\u201d (1953) and \u201cSwiss Family Robinson\u201d (1960) also feature the warning ahead of the film.<\/p>\n

The highly controversial \u201cSong of the South\u201d (1946) is not available on the streaming service.<\/p>\n

Most recently, \u201cThe Muppet Show\u201d had warning disclaimers placed prior to each episode, warning viewers that the show features \u201cstereotypes\u201d and \u201cmistreatment of people or cultures.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together,\u201d the disclaimer says<\/a>, adding \u201cDisney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational theme<\/a>s that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n

The disclaimers are not a signal that the films have been canceled, Ben Mankiewicz, a host on classic TV network TCM, told the Reporter.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody\u2019s canceling these movies,\u201d he said. \u201cOur job is not to get up and say, \u2018Here\u2019s a movie that you should feel guilty about for liking.\u2019 But to pretend that the racism in it is not painful and acute? No. I do not want to shy away from that. This was inevitable. And welcomed. And overdue.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
