The New York Times has walked away from efforts to stop Time magazine from using the \u201cTime 100 Talks\u201d name for the series<\/a> of discussions it hosts with influential people, Media<\/a> Ink has learned. <\/p>\n

The Gray Lady withdrew its complaint on Feb. 26 \u2014 just four months after claiming that the name infringed on the trademark of its own live-event series \u201cTimesTalks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Court documents show the news<\/a>paper agreed to drop the case \u201cwith prejudice\u201d meaning the case can\u2019t be refiled.<\/p>\n

Sources say no money changed hands and Time magazine will continue to use the \u201cTime 100 Talks\u201d name to promote its talks with high-profile people. <\/p>\n

In fact, Time president and editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal posted interviews with comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, Rise founder Amanda Nguyen and author and former Time editor Walter Isaacson on Feb. 26, the same day the suit was dropped, under the Time 100 Talks logo. <\/p>\n

Time declined to comment, while the New York Times offered a statement suggesting they prevailed in court. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re pleased to have reached this outcome, which allows\u00a0Time100\u00a0Talks\u00a0to coexist\u00a0with TimesTalks in a\u00a0way that won\u2019t\u00a0cause\u00a0confusion\u00a0among readers,\u00a0which was our primary consideration,\u201d said an NYT spokeswoman.<\/p>\n

Salesforce founder Marc Benioff and wife Lynne, who bought Time for $190 million in 2018, have been pushing into podcasts, live events and TV shows to offset the declines in print. <\/p>\n

When the suit was initially filed a Time spokeswoman blasted it as \u201cbaseless and somewhat bewildering.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe TIME 100 brand has been registered as a trademark and widely recognized for more than two decades, and the word \u2018talks\u2019 is commonly used across similar programs in many industries,\u201d she said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
