French philosopher and prophet Michel de Nostradamus reportedly predicted a zombie apocalypse for 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But fear not! <\/p>\n

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has your back with a set of zombie preparedness tips it has maintained for a full decade.<\/p>\n

\u201cWonder why zombies, zombie apocalypse, and zombie preparedness continue to live or walk dead on a CDC web site?\u201d asks the guide<\/a>, which was developed in 2011 as a marketing gimmick \u2014 and an attention-grabbing one at that. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs it turns out what first began as a tongue-in-cheek campaign to engage new audiences with preparedness messages has proven to be a very effective platform,\u201d the guide continues. \u201cWe continue to reach and engage a wide variety of audiences on all hazards preparedness via \u2018zombie preparedness.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

If, as the interpreters of Nostradamus\u2019 Yearly-Horoscope believe, a zombie invasion is nigh, then it will be a great told-you-so moment for the CDC.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFew young people: half-dead to give a start,\u201d the 16th century astrologer wrote<\/a>, ominously adding, \u201cFathers and mothers dead of infinite sorrows \/ Women in mourning, the pestilent she\u2212monster: \/ The Great One to be no more, all the world to end.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

To prepare for that bloody, flesh-eating worst, the CDC page links to various \u201cZombie Preparedness Products,\u201d including a download<\/a>able zombie preparedness graphic novel<\/a>; a printable poster<\/a> of an undead-looking, leering person with very dirty fingernails; and tips for educators looking to plan zombie-related lessons. (Sample teaching tool<\/a>: \u201cThe zombie apocalypse threat is imminent. The mayor\u2019s staff has been compromised, and it is up to you to write a speech for the mayor advising the community about what actions to take. What do you tell the community to do?\u201d)<\/p>\n

The bizarre page on the otherwise dead-serious site was published in May 2011 after the CDC\u2019s head of communications became concerned about the agency\u2019s reach \u2014 and decided the agency\u2019s first ever posts to Twitter and Facebook<\/a> should be fun.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were talking about hurricane season, which begins 1 June. I think about hurricane season, and we put out the same messages every year, and I wonder if people even see those messages,\u201d CDC rep Dave Daigle told The Atlantic<\/a> at the time. \u201cWe have a great message here about preparedness, and I don\u2019t have to tell you that preparedness and public health are not the sexiest topics,\u201d<\/p>\n

The page proved so popular, it trip<\/a>led traffic to the CDC\u2019s site and crashed its server.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Actual zombie preppers, however, were critical of the CDC\u2019s advice, saying it fell short in a specific way.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u201dThat was one of the first things we got from the zombie crowd \u2026 \u2018What weapons do you guys recommend?’\u201d Daigle said. \u201cRemember, we\u2019re a public-health center, so we\u2019re not going to recommend weapons \u2026 We\u2019ll leave that to the law-enforcement folks.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
