{"id":194676,"date":"2021-03-05T03:17:20","date_gmt":"2021-03-05T00:17:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/booksellers-were-unprepared-for-dr-seuss-ban-as-sales-skyrocket\/"},"modified":"2021-03-05T03:17:20","modified_gmt":"2021-03-05T00:17:20","slug":"booksellers-were-unprepared-for-dr-seuss-ban-as-sales-skyrocket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/booksellers-were-unprepared-for-dr-seuss-ban-as-sales-skyrocket\/","title":{"rendered":"#Booksellers were unprepared for Dr. Seuss ban as sales skyrocket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Booksellers were unprepared for Dr. Seuss ban as sales skyrocket<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Booksellers say they were completely caught off guard when Dr. Seuss\u2019s publisher yanked six books for racially offensive imagery this week in a move that\u2019s only served to send sales skyrocketing. <\/p>\n<p>James Daunt, CEO of Barnes &amp; Noble, only learned of the move by Dr. Seuss Enterprises when a journalist called him at the bookseller\u2019s London offices. \u201cAt first, I had no idea what he was talking about,\u201d Daunt told <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Ink.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, he and other booksellers, including Jeff Bezos\u2019s online behemoth Amazon, have benefited tremendously as fans (and a smattering of profiteers) have used the prohibition as an excuse to rush out and buy whatever Dr. Seuss titles they can find, including those not banned. <\/p>\n<p>The stampede has resulted in hundreds of Barnes &amp; Noble\u2019s 620 retail stores selling out of some of the most popular titles by the beloved children\u2019s author born Theodor Seuss Geisel, including \u201cCat in the Hat\u201d and \u201cGreen Eggs and Ham.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should be able to re-stock  within days,\u201d Daunt said of the buying spree. <\/p>\n<p>Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to have had a similar experience with shoppers on Wednesday attempting to buy banned titles being told they were \u201cunavailable,\u201d sources said.  Sales of Dr. Suess\u2019s non-banned books, meanwhile, have been booming on the online shopping portal. <\/p>\n<p>By Thursday afternoon, just seven of Amazon\u2019s top 30 titles across all categories were not written by Dr. Seuss. \u201cCat in the Hat,\u201d \u201cOne Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish\u201d and \u201cHorton Hears a Who,\u201d meanwhile, dominated the top three.  <\/p>\n<p>Amazon didn\u2019t return a request for comment. <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" alt=\"Dr. Seuss holding a copy of &quot;The Cat in the Hat&quot; in 1957. Kelly<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Scott Wong, manager of Books of Wonder, a kids bookstore on W. 17th St. in Manhattan, said the yanked books haven\u2019t been in the rotation for some time. \u201cWe carried it in the past, but it hasn\u2019t been in our inventory for quite awhile.\u201d   <\/p>\n<p>That hasn\u2019t stopped the books from commanding inflated prices online. One seller of the six banned books in new condition on eBay was offering the entire lot for $19,999 before eBay shut down the auction on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>In announcing the decision, Dr. Seuss Enterprises said, \u201cThese books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong. Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment to and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprises\u2019 catalog represents and supports all communities and families.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Daunt said he thought the decision to pull the offensive books was a good one, but the decision has been controversial. <\/p>\n<p>A Web site has sprung up called BannedSeuss run by the Foundation Against Intolerance and Racism that says: \u201cErasing books is insanity. Stand up for our common humanity.\u201d The Foundation behind it claims to be a non-partisan organization \u201cdedicated to advancing civil rights and liberties for all Americans, and promoting a common culture based on fairness, understanding and humanity.\u201d It did not return an email from Media Ink seeking comment. <\/p>\n<p>None of the banned books could be found at the Barnes &amp; Noble in Manhattan\u2019s Union Square on Thursday even though an associate said he believed the store had \u201cAnd To Think I Found It on Mulberry Street\u201d in stock as recently as Wednesday.
