\n Students in Tuscaloosa, Alabama are reportedly throwing \u201cCOVID parties\u201d with their friends and gambling on who will get sick first, according to local officials.<\/p>\n

City Council member Sonya McKinstry testified on Wednesday that a series<\/a> of previously reported parties were all part of a morbid game<\/a> that included intentionally inviting COVID-positive students in an attempt to intentionally contract the deadly virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey put money in a pot and they try to get COVID. Whoever gets COVID first gets the pot. It makes no sense,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

City council members did not mention the University of Alabama by name, but the school is the largest college in the city and the flagship school of the state\u2019s university system.<\/p>\n

Tuscaloosa City Fire Chief Randy Smith briefed the council on these parties earlier this week, saying that authorities thought students\u2019 intentional gambling on virus transmission \u201cwas kind of a rumor at first,\u201d but added, \u201cWe did some additional research \u2026. not only did the doctor\u2019s offices help confirm it but the state confirmed they also had the same information.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the news<\/a>, McKinstry insists the city is taking the public health threat of coronavirus seriously.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to break up any parties that we know of,\u201d she told ABC News.<\/p>\n

There have been at least 37,536 recorded coronavirus infections and 926 fatalities in Alabama.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
