The boss of Jeep\u2019s parent company says he\u2019s willing to stop slapp<\/a>ing the Cherokee Nation\u2019s name on the automaker\u2019s SUVs.<\/p>\n

Carlos Tavares, the CEO of newly formed auto conglomerate Stellantis, expressed openness to the change after the nation\u2019s largest Native American tribe urged Jeep to ditch the branding.<\/p>\n

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal<\/a>, Tavares said Stellantis was having discussions with the Cherokee Nation about Jeep\u2019s use of the name on two of its most popular vehicles: the Grand Cherokee and the smaller Cherokee model that was introduced in 2013.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are ready to go to any point, up to the point where we decide with the appropriate people and with no intermedia<\/a>ries,\u201d Tavares told the paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this stage, I don\u2019t know if there is a real problem,\u201d he added, noting that he is not personally involved in the talks with the tribe. \u201cBut if there is one, well, of course we will solve it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tavares addressed the issue after Chuck Hoskin Jr., the Cherokee Nation\u2019s principal chief, asked Jeep to stop using the tribe\u2019s name for the first time last month.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure this comes from a place that is well-intended, but it does not honor us by having our name plastered on the side of a car,\u201d Hoskin told Car and Driver magazine.<\/p>\n

The Cherokee and Grand Cherokee are two of Jeep\u2019s best-selling models and accounted for 43 percent of the brand\u2019s sales last year. Stellantis \u2014 which was formed by the January merger of Fiat Chrysler and French automaker PSA \u2014 is planning to roll out a redesigned Grand Cherokee this year, according to the Journal.<\/p>\n

While he\u2019s open to honoring the Cherokee Nation\u2019s request, Tavares claimed the practice of naming cars after indigenous tribes was a way of showing respect.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see anything that would be negative here,\u201d he told the Journal. \u201cI think it\u2019s just a matter of expressing our creative passion, our artistic capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cherokee Nation, which has about 370,000 citizens, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday. But a spokesperson for the tribe told the Journal that it has an \u201copen dialogue with Stellantis leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe appreciate Stellantis\u2019 reaching out and thoughtful approach on this,\u201d the spokesperson told the paper Wednesday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
