Like many companies these days, your potential new workplace will give you a personality test as part of the hiring process. You plan to give answers that show you\u2019re enthusiastic, a hard worker and a real people person.<\/p>\n<p>Then they put you on camera while you take the test verbally, and you frown slightly during one of your answers, and their facial-analysis program decides you\u2019re \u201cdifficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sorry, next please!<\/p>\n<p>This is just one of many problems with the increasing use of artificial intelligence in hiring, contends the new documentary \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XWBXniurrA0&amp;t=2s\">Persona: The Dark Truth Behind Personality Tests,<\/a>\u201d premiering Thursday on HBO Max. <\/p>\n<p>The film, from director Tim Travers Hawkins, begins with the origins of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator personality test. The mid-20th century brainchild of a mother-daughter team, it sorts people based on four factors: introversion\/extraversion, sensing\/intuition, thinking\/feeling and judging\/perceiving. The quiz, which has an astrology-like cult following for its 16 four-lettered \u201ctypes,\u201d has evolved into a hiring tool used throughout corporate America, along with successors such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openpsychometrics.org\/tests\/IPIP-BFFM\/\">the \u201cBig Five,\u201d which measures five major personality traits<\/a>: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Persona | Official Trailer | HBO Max\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XWBXniurrA0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cPersona\u201d argues that the written test contains certain baked-in prejudices; for example, the potential for discriminating against those not familiar with the type of language or scenarios used in the test.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And according to the film, incorporating artificial intelligence into the process makes things even more problematic.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> scans written <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lications for red-flag words and, when an on-camera interview is involved, screens applicants for facial expressions that might contradict responses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" alt=\"Four Generations of Briggs Meyers Women.\" class=\"wp-image-17467684 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/personality-tests-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/personality-tests-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/personality-tests-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/personality-tests-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/personality-tests-01.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Four Generations of Briggs Meyers Women.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">HBO Max<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201c[It] operates on 19th-century pseudo-scientific reasoning that emotions and character can be standardized from facial expressions,\u201d Ifeoma Ajunwa, associate professor of law and director of the AI Decision-Making Research Program at University of North Carolina Law, told The Post via email.<\/p>\n<p>Ajunwa, who appears the film, says the potential for bias is huge. \u201cGiven that the automated systems are usually trained on white male faces and voices, the facial expressions or vocal tones of women and racial minorities may be misjudged. In addition, there is the privacy concern arising from the collection of biometric data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One widely used recruiting company, HireVue, would analyze applicants\u2019 \u201cfacial movements, word choice and speaking voice before ranking them against other applicants based on an automatically generated \u2019employability\u2019 score,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2019\/10\/22\/ai-hiring-face-scanning-algorithm-increasingly-decides-whether-you-deserve-job\/\">the Washington Post reported.<\/a> The company has since stopped the practice, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/resourcesandtools\/hr-topics\/talent-acquisition\/pages\/hirevue-discontinues-facial-analysis-screening.aspx\">it announced just last month<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although they claim \u201cvisual analysis no longer significantly added value to the assessments,\u201d the move followed an outcry over potentially damaging effects.<\/p>\n<p>Cathy O\u2019Neil is a data <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> consultant, author of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Weapons-Math-Destruction-Increases-Inequality\/dp\/0553418831?tag=nypost-20\">\u201cWeapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy,\u201d<\/a> and<em> <\/em>one of the experts interviewed in \u201cPersona.\u201d Her company, O\u2019Neil Risk Consulting &amp; Algorithmic Auditing (ORCAA), provided an audit of practices at HireVue following their announcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo technology is inherently harmful; it is just a tool,\u201d she told The Post via email. \u201cBut just as a sharp knife can be used to cut bread or kill a man, facial recognition could be used to harm individuals or communities .\u2009.\u2009. This is particularly true because people often assume that technology is objective and even perfect. But New York City is the first <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/new-york-city-proposes-regulating-algorithms-hiring\/\">to introduce a bill<\/a> that would specifically regulate their use in the hiring process. It would compel companies to disclose to applicants that they are using the technology, and conduct an annual audit for bias.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote><p>Just as a sharp knife can be used to cut bread or kill a man, facial recognition could be used to harm individuals or communities.<\/p>\n<p><cite>Data science consultant Cathy O\u2019Neil<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But Ajunwa thinks this doesn\u2019t go far enough. It is \u201ca necessary first step to preserving the civil liberties of workers,\u201d she said. But \u201cwhat we need are federal regulations that attach to federal anti-discrimination laws and which would apply in all states, not just New York City.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To those who knew Isabel Briggs Myers, seeing the test, hand-in-hand with AI, being used to ruthlessly determine whether people are \u201chirable\u201d seems a far cry from her original intention, which was to help users find their true callings.<\/p>\n<p>As one of Briggs Myers\u2019 granddaughters says in the film, \u201cI think there are ways it\u2019s being used that she would want to correct.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
