\n New Zealand\u2019s embattled health minister \u2014 who was twice discovered violating coronavirus lockdown rules \u2014 has resigned after previously calling himself an \u201cidiot\u201d for showing poor judgment, according to reports.<\/p>\n

David Clark had already been demoted after going mountain biking and taking his family on a beach outing some 15 miles from his Dunedin home, the UK\u2019s Guardian reported.<\/p>\n

He has apologized for both incidents, telling Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern that he was an \u201cidiot\u201d for the lapse in judgment.<\/p>\n

In response, Ardern demoted Clark in the cabinet rankings but held back from axing him, saying his expertise was needed during the public health crisis.<\/p>\n

But in the weeks after Clark was demoted, public dislike for him has mounted despite overall praise for the country\u2019s coronavirus response under the leadership of Dr. Ashley Bloomfield, the director-general<\/a> of health, the news<\/a> outlet reported.<\/p>\n

Last week, Clark refused to take responsibility for multiple failures, including people being released from quarantine without being tested for the virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cI take full responsibility for decisions made and taken during my time as minister of health,\u201d he said, according to the BBC.<\/p>\n

Ardern accepted Clark\u2019s resignation, saying it was \u201cessential our health leadership has the confidence of the New Zealand public.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid has come to the conclusion his presence in the role is creating an unhelpful distraction from the government\u2019s ongoing response to COVID-19 and wider health reforms,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Education Minister Chris Hipkins will assume the reins of the Health Department until the country\u2019s election in September.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
