\n Schoolchildren have long been taught that Earth\u2019s\u00a0composed of\u00a0four main layers: the crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core. But a\u00a0new study suggests their textbooks may be incomplete.<\/p>\n

Researchers from The Australian National University (ANU) discovered a mysterious new layer at the center of the planet: the \u201cinnermost inner core.\u201d<\/p>\n

They suspect it contains secrets about an unknown, dramatic event in the Earth\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

Geologists first proposed the\u00a0idea of a fifth layer decades ago, but had previously struggled to detect it.<\/p>\n

The new study unearthed further evidence by analyzing changes to seismic waves as they travel<\/a> through our planet\u2019s core.<\/p>\n

The team used a search algorithm to compare thousands of models of the inner core with travel time data for seismic waves.<\/p>\n

They found changes to the structure of iron around 650km from the center of the Earth \u2014 indicating the presence of an extra layer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe found\u00a0evidence that may indicate a change in the\u00a0structure of iron, which suggests perhaps two separate cooling events in Earth\u2019s history,\u201d said study author Joanne Stephenson in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The details of these events remain somewhat mysterious. But Stephenson believes further analysis\u00a0could deepen our understanding of the Earth\u2019s evolution:<\/p>\n

It\u2019s very exciting \u2014 and might mean we have to re-write the textbooks!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
