What do we know about it?<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                            Vaxx Populi: It&#8217;s a single-dose vaccine with standard refrigeration requirements and a 65 per cent efficacy at preventing moderate-to-severe infection\n                        <\/div>\n<div>\n                                                                        <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, let\u2019s sort out the nomenclature. The COVID-19 vaccine <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.janssen.com\/canada\/sites\/www_janssen_com_canada\/files\/johnson_johnson_announces_agreement_in_principle_with_government_of_canada_to_supply_its_covid-19_vaccine_candidate.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ad26.COV2.S<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is technically the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/drugs-health-products\/covid19-industry\/drugs-vaccines-treatments\/authorization\/applications.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Janssen vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as that\u2019s the name of the division in Belgium of Johnson &amp; Johnson where the vaccine was developed. But it\u2019s most popularly known as the Johnson &amp; Johnson (J&amp;J) vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On March 5, Health Canada approved the J&amp;J vaccine, making it the fourth COVID-19 vaccine to be given the OK for adults in Canada, following ones by Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0Israel is the world leader in vaccinations. What can Canada learn from them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The J&amp;J vaccine is a single dose vaccine, unlike the other three<\/span><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which need two doses to reach maximum strength. And that \u201cone and done\u201d factor means it will be ideal for vaccinating communities that are transient or at higher risk of not returning for a timely second dose, such as the homeless, or rotational workers. And<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it will be easier to administer for public health units, which won\u2019t have to deal with the complicated logistics of giving second doses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vaccine, which <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/27\/health\/covid-vaccine-johnson-and-johnson.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was approved in late February for emergency use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States, is expected to play a big role in Canada\u2019s vaccination program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_many_doses_of_the_Johnson_Johnson_vaccine_do_you_need\"><\/span><b>How many doses of the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine do you need?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Just one.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_J_J_vaccines_efficacy\"><\/span><b>What is the J&amp;J vaccine\u2019s efficacy?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In trials, the J&amp;J vaccine was found to be <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2021\/01\/29\/jj-one-dose-covid-vaccine-is-66-effective-a-weapon-but-not-a-knockout-punch\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">66 per cent effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overall in protecting against moderate to severe COVID-19, 28 days after injection. That exceeds the efficacy standards of Health Canada, the U.S. Food &amp; Drug Administration and the World Health Organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was also <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biospace.com\/article\/j-and-j-covid-19-vaccine-66-percent-effective-against-all-strains\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">85 per cent effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against severe COVID-19 alone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the roughly 45,000 people in the vaccine\u2019s worldwide stage 3 trial\u2014in which half got the shot, half got a placebo\u2014464 people developed moderate<\/span><b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to<\/span><b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe COVID-19 symptoms, Health Canada explained when announcing its approval. Of those 464 cases of COVID-19, 348 had received the placebo with 116 having received the vaccine. And there were five deaths, all from the placebo group, explained Dr. Supriya Sharma, Health Canada\u2019s chief medical adviser.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"There_were_regional_variations_among_the_trial_volunteers_around_the_world\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px;\">There were regional variations among the trial volunteers around the world:\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson &amp; Johnson is also in the middle of recruiting volunteers for a huge clinical trial of a two-dose J&amp;J regimen, but results from that trial are still months away. (All the vaccine makers are continuing to research how their vaccines perform, testing age groups not included in their initial phase 3 trials (such as children) as well as seeing what happens if they alter the time between doses, and also tweak the vaccines in an attempt to bolster their effectiveness against the new variants of concern).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0Is it possible to mix-and-match COVID-19 vaccines?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_it_differ_from_the_previously_approved_vaccines\"><\/span><b>How does it differ from the previously approved vaccines?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The J&amp;J vaccine is a viral-vector based vaccine, unlike the mRNA-based ones from Pfizer and Moderna. Here is<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/drugs-health-products\/covid19-industry\/drugs-vaccines-treatments\/vaccines\/type-viral-vector.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Canada\u2019s explanation for how those viral-vector vaccines work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese types of vaccines use a harmless virus (in this case, the adenovirus) as a delivery system. The vector virus used is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the virus that causes COVID-19. Adenoviruses are viruses that cause the common cold. There are many different types, including those that cause colds in humans and those that may infect other species. People have been using these viruses for decades to deliver the instructions for proteins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once injected into the body, the virus contained within the vaccine produces the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. This protein doesn\u2019t make you sick. It does its job and then goes away. Through this process, the body is able to mount a strong immune response against the spike protein without exposing you to the virus that causes COVID-19.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0COVID-19 in Canada: How our battle to stop the pandemic is going<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Are_there_any_safety_concerns_and_how_well_does_the_J_J_vaccine_work_for_seniors_and_those_with_co-morbidities\"><\/span><b>Are there any safety concerns and how well does the J&amp;J vaccine work for seniors and those with co-morbidities?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson &amp; Johnson said <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/146217\/download\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there were no significant adverse reactions<\/span><\/a><b>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/wellness\/best-vaccine-johnson-moderna-pfizer\/2021\/02\/25\/acf6527e-76af-11eb-9537-496158cc5fd9_story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">efficacy on higher-risk populations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appears to be comparable with other vaccines. Dr.\u00a0 Sharma says there were zero hospitalizations after the 28-day endpoint for trial volunteers who got the vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importantly, J&amp;J\u2019s stage 3 trial <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jnj.com\/johnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine-authorized-by-u-s-fda-for-emergency-usefirst-single-shot-vaccine-in-fight-against-global-pandemic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">included people in the higher-risk populations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Thirty-four per cent of the volunteers were over age 60 and 41 per cent had comorbidities \u201cassociated with an increased risk for progression to severe COVID-19.\u201d Of the participants from the United States, 15 per cent were Hispanic, 13 per cent were Black, six per cent were Asian and one per cent were Indigenous people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_advantages_of_this_vaccine\"><\/span><b>What are the advantages of this vaccine?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to being a single-dose vaccine, the J&amp;J vaccine has standard refrigeration storage requirements, like the AstraZeneca vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adenovirus-based vaccines<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like the J&amp;J COVID-19 vaccine and the AstraZeneca one,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are more rugged than mRNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna,\u201d the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/health\/johnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explained. \u201cDNA is not as fragile as RNA, and the adenovirus\u2019s tough protein coat helps protect the genetic material inside. As a result, the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine can be refrigerated for up to three months at 36\u201346\u00b0F (2\u20138\u00b0C).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_many_doses_of_the_J_J_vaccine_has_Canada_ordered\"><\/span><b>How many doses of the J&amp;J vaccine has Canada ordered?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ir.novavax.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/novavax-and-government-canada-finalize-advance-purchase\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to 38 million doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, per a J&amp;J announcement from August 2020. That would technically be enough to vaccinate all Canadians.
