href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y6120QOlsfU\">Darude\u2019s \u201cSandstorm\u201d<\/a> blare through someone else\u2019s headphones. \u201cI was quite young at the time, and I thought, \u2018Why would you listen to <i>dance music<\/i> as <i>headphone music<\/i>? That\u2019s not what it\u2019s for.\u2019\u201d Only now does he realize why that seemingly insignificant observation stuck with him: \u201cI think my sense of repulsion was actually a sense of curiosity.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Curiosity is the club drug that fuels the 31-year-old British producer\u2019s new record <i>Harlecore<\/i>, which he describes as his love letter to rave music. \u201cIt\u2019s based in this inner world: an internal, headphone situation,\u201d Harle explains of the project. \u201cIt\u2019s not about a live environment in its conception but rather a club that exists on the internet. When I came up with the idea three years ago, I was dreading introducing it to the world. It seemed so hypothetical to base a project around the idea of an online club. But now that they\u2019re everywhere, I realized I don\u2019t have to explain the concept.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Animated as a towering \u201ctemple of euphoria,\u201d Club Harlecore is a fully-rendered virtual space that opened (online) the day <i>Harlecore<\/i> dropped. Upon entering, clubgoers are met with Euphoria Stadium, where DJ Danny slings out enormous hooks and pummeling riffs to the ascending masses on tracks like lead single \u201cOn A Mountain,\u201d or \u201cWhere Are You Now\u201d. But Harle knows it takes a village to make a night, and listeners are only an elevator ride away from club enigmas DJ Mayhem, DJ Ocean, and MC Boing at any point. G. Cook in 2013. Those early sets conglomerated his progressive pop instinct with rave artifacts and turn-of-the-century Eurodance gems, particularly those relegated by history to the guilty pleasure bin, like \u201cVengaBus&#8221; or \u201cHampster Dance\u201d. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            The nights were dubbed <i>Harlecore<\/i>, which in turn eventually became a catch-all phrase for the energy he was orchestrating. Harle began generating songs specifically tailored for those DJ sets, and \u201cthe music just accumulated as the nights were going on.\u201d Those songs comprise the bulk of the new album. \u201cIf it\u2019s fit for live performance, as far as I\u2019m concerned, it\u2019s fit for release. I wanted a raw expression of how these tracks go down live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Each second of <i>Harlecore<\/i> feels like it\u2019s bursting at the seams. Its hooks are melancholy affirmations in resilient pursuit of higher love and the infinite kiss of Eurodance. \u201cDo you remember? We were in heaven,\u201d Georgia Twinn coos over heart-racing synths on \u201cDo You Remember,\u201d a track evocative enough to tickle the recesses of your brain that haven\u2019t been stimulated <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7i7g9ccjkc8\">since DJ Sammy infiltrated top 40 radio with \u201cHeaven.\u201d <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have quite a simple brain, and I like to hear the same thing over and over again rather than hearing the lyrics change,\u201d Harle explains. For him, a satisfactory hook tiptoes the cliff\u2019s edge without taking the plunge; it\u2019s a moment encased in its eternal search for resolution. \u201cOne could argue that these looping patterns are a kind of vision of utopia, in that they evoke this idea of order to the listener. An accidental lunch with mega-producer Max Martin, one of Harle&#8217;s heroes, further confirmed this fate. \u201cHe was talking about Coldplay innovating the use of a certain type of synthesizer in their sound. I, quite cockily, said that I never considered Coldplay to have innovated anything, and everyone went quiet.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            At present he\u2019s more focused on a different type of innovation. Dance music is an inherently anonymous genre, obscured by an infinite supply of coded DJ names and uncredited vocal samples. <i>Harlecore<\/i> plays with that precedent, but it\u2019s also resolute in illuminating its lineage. \u201cI\u2019m really hoping that through this record I can promote the artists that influenced it,\u201d he says. \u201cThey\u2019re not big or famous, but they\u2019re incredible pioneers of music that go quite unrecognized in the UK. <i>Harlecore<\/i> is trying to communicate my feeling of euphoria at listening to this music.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-220649\" class=\"content_block paragraph video triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"MC Boing - Boing Beat (Official Lyric Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5EpnYQW8XWY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('220649');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-220665\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Consider MC Boing, the pint-sized chaos agent delivering ferociously fast demands with an insurmountable rabid grin: \u201cPlay the piano, play the piano, all day night all day night all day.\u201d Engineered by Harle and Lil Data, he immediately feels like a spiritual descendent of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k85mRPqvMbE\">Crazy Frog<\/a> or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=68ugkg9RePc\">Eiffel 65\u2019s blue guy<\/a>, but the source material is even more granular. \u201cPeople used to send me <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GVYpM3RTCII\">this clip<\/a> of a kid r<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing to a real fast track in Tesco, saying \u2018Oh my God, it\u2019s real MC Boing!\u2019\u201d Harle recalls. \u201cThe thing that wasn\u2019t being understood there is that MC Boing is a m\u00e1kina emcee. M\u00e1kina is not really talked about in the mainstream press, but it\u2019s an amazing musical genre that exists in north England where my father is from.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>            And there wouldn\u2019t be <i>Harlecore<\/i> to begin with if it wasn\u2019t for Glaswegian hardcore, specifically that of producer and DJ Scott Brown. It was a mutual fascination with Brown\u2019s knack for riffs that bonded Harle with another of his production heroes, Hudson Mohawke. \u201cWe tried making music in a session together in L.A., and we found a new style of this rave music we both loved using his enormous beast kicks and my euphoric chords,\u201d says Harle. She was born out of Harle\u2019s work with Caroline Polachek, a kinship that deepened as the two produced her 2019 album <i>Pang<\/i> together. Where that record demonstrated their cinematic pop capabilities, \u201cOcean\u2019s Theme\u201d and \u201cFor So Long\u201d exhibit the kind of wordless paeans that could only be achieved through shared intuition. \u201cWith Caroline, it was very clear that we had such similar ideas about how music should sound and such trust in each other that we established a way of working that felt effortless even before <i>Pang<\/i>,\u201d Harle says.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cAt one point Caroline and I were talking about what kind of reverb to use on [<i>Pang<\/i> track] \u2018Parachute,&#8217;\u201d Harle recalls. \u201cI asked her, \u2018Where is this taking place?\u2019 The reverb could make it sound as though it\u2019s in a room, or in a church, or in a cave, or outside. We went with a plate reverb, an endless one that has no walls. The palace of the mind has no walls, my lord.\u201d <i>Harlecore<\/i>, much like <i>Pang<\/i>, is a carefully considered document of world-building. <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cIt\u2019s interesting that artists don\u2019t think from that perspective more often,\u201d Harle adds. \u201c<i>Where<\/i> is this song being performed? Harle himself doesn\u2019t listen to albums, and doesn\u2019t consider this to be his debut LP, despite it ticking most boxes qualifying it as such. \u201cThat\u2019s how people view stuff, but I\u2019ve never been interested in controlling that narrative,\u201d he says. \u201cI will make a Danny L Harle album, but I can\u2019t confirm when. For now, this is <i>Harlecore<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            As for the inevitable placement on Spotify\u2019s infamous hyperpop playlist, he admits he doesn\u2019t understand what the word means, even if he\u2019s sometimes heralded as one of the microgenre\u2019s forefathers: \u201cI don\u2019t think if a hyperpop artist wanted to work with me that I\u2019d be able to actually do what they wanted. It\u2019s turned into a new thing and that\u2019s how culture works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Don\u2019t take that as cynicism though. \u201cThe classic response would be to dislike the thing that comes after what you\u2019ve done, because it means things have moved on. But to dislike it would be to invalidate yourself,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve listened to countless interviews with rave DJs and they all say the same thing: <i>The scene was great when I was a big deal in it, but then the new kids came in and that music was bad.<\/i> That\u2019s not something I feel at all.
