Stephen Sondheim is not known for his bankable concepts. He\u2019s written Broadway musicals about a cannibal barber (\u201cSweeney Todd\u201d), an ugly Italian woman whose love goes unrequited (\u201cPassion\u201d) and the story of a broken friendship that\u2019s told backwards (\u201cMerrily We Roll Along\u201d). <\/p>\n

But his hardest sell ever was \u201cAssassins,\u201d about about those who have attempted to kill presidents, which opened in 1991. \u201cHey, pal, feeling blue?\u201d goes the first lyric. \u201cDon\u2019t know what to do? Hey, pal, I mean you. Come here and kill a president!\u201d \u201cCats,\u201d it is not.<\/p>\n

The dark show\u2019s cast of criminals includes John Wilkes Booth, Lynette \u201cSqueaky\u201d Fromme and Lee Harvey Oswald. To give you an idea of what these ne\u2019er-do-wells are serving up, John Hinckley Jr. and Fromme sing a romantic duet to Jodie Foster and Charles Manson called \u201cUnworthy of Your Love.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have had great theatrical experiences, but \u2018Assassins\u2019 outweighs them all,\u201d original cast member Patrick Cassidy told The Post. \u201cGetting to originate a Sondheim\/[John] Weidman show is every actor\u2019s dream.\u201d<\/p>\n

The musical\u2019s reputation has skyrocketed since it first premiered off-Broadway at the tiny Playwrights Horizons to a mixed review<\/a> from the New York Times\u2019 Frank Rich, and running just 73 performances. \u201cAssassins\u201d later won the Best Revival Tony Award in 2004, and for its 30th anniversary, the original cast is reuniting virtually Monday night at 8 p.m. as part of the free online \u201cStudio Tenn Talks: Conversations With Patrick Cassidy<\/a>\u201d series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cassidy, who has also starred on Broadway in \u201c42nd Street\u201d and \u201cAnnie Get Your Gun,\u201d has brought together actors Victor Garber, Annie Golden, Debra Monk, Terrence Mann and more, along with Sondheim, Weidman, musical director Paul Gemignani and director Jerry Zaks, to share memories of their controversial show and sing a few songs.<\/p>\n

The experience is bubbling up fond and strange memories for Cassidy.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople would ask me, \u2018What is \u2018Assassins\u2019 about?,\u201d he said of the early days. \u201cI said, \u2018Well, it\u2019s a musical . . . about the presidential assassins.\u2019 And everybody steps back and goes, \u2018Really?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIt was scary. There was a real fear of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

One woman in the audience was so terrified, she loudly announced her departure while Cassidy was still singing.<\/p>\n

The actor played a folk-singer narrator called the Balladeer, and during a number about Charles Guiteau, the lawyer who killed President James A. Garfield, she just lost it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter [Giuseppe] Zangara, [who attempted to kill president-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt<\/a>], is electrocuted, I sing the song \u2018The Ballad of Guiteau,\u2019 \u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s walking up to the gallows, getting higher and higher, and I remember toward the end of the number hearing a woman say, \u2018Norman, Norman, they\u2019re gonna hang him! I gotta get outta here, Norman!\u2019 \u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
