A flush handful of diners have even dropped C-notes like dinner mints on flabbergasted waiters, they added.<\/p>\n<p>Chinatown furniture gallery owner Jan Lee tweeted in response to our survey: \u201c100% of the time, we tip way more than we did b4. Even tip when we pick up food ourselves.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many restaurant mavens who previously tipped 20% said they now tip between 30 and 40% \u2014 a range that came up repeatedly in our unscientific poll.<\/p>\n<p>They cited euphoria over not having to eat at home every night as one reason for their super generous gratuity. But they also wanted to help employees who lost income during lockdowns, who are at risk of COVID-19 exposure on the job and who must now work harder due to reduced staffing.<\/p>\n<p>Most agree that old advice to tip 15 to 20% is badly out of date. Amit Mehrotra, an assistant professor in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.citytech.cuny.edu\/faculty\/AMehrotra\">City Tech<\/a>\u2018s Department of Hospitality Management,\u00a0advised adding\u00a015 to 20% on takeout orders and, \u201c20 to 25 to 30% for indoor dining should be a goal in the near term until we are somewhat out of this pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignleft\">\n<blockquote><p>Many restaurant mavens who previously tipped 20% said they now tip between 30 and 40% \u2014 a range that came up repeatedly in our unscientific poll.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Restaurant-lover Adam Richman, 30, the founder of production company Medium Rare, which created the Gronk Beach music festival starring Super Bowl hero Rob Gronkowski, said: \u201cOn average I\u2019m tipping 30%. I used to tip 20%. In some of my regular places I find myself tipping 40 to 50%. I find myself giving more to coat-check staff and bathroom attendants, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richman eats out three or four nights a week at such diverse\u00a0spots as Campagnola, 4 Charles Prime Rib and Yakiniku Futago.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cHalleljuah that indoor dining is open,\u201d he said. \u201cPlain and simple, these employees are the lifeblood of our city and our government destroyed them with no regard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn co<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>n and writer Jessica Sager, 34, said she and her husband now tip at least \u201c40% for takeout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel like since, knock on wood, our jobs and income have been relatively secure, that it\u2019s our responsibility to do what we can to help the community survive,\u201d she said. \u201cI always tip extra generously when ordering from Asian restaurants, because they\u2019ve faced so much prejudice since the COVID-19 crisis began.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Caliva, 34, a Gramercy resident who works in financial services, and his wife, Megan, 35, just celebrated her birthday at popular Misi in Brooklyn. He laughed that when outdoor dining first resumed last June, he was so excited, \u201cI tipped like 50% on our first meal out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly at 20%, but now I\u2019m closer to 25 or 30% tipping,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, the gratuity groundswell isn\u2019t everywhere.\u00a0\u00a0An <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grubstreet.com\/2020\/07\/tip-50-percent.html\">elitist-sounding essay<\/a> on GrubStreet.com last summer urged everyone to tip 50 or even 100%. Lee says that customers have been generously giving more during Covid, tipping up to $1000 to support the staff.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Stephen Yang<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cGood for them, but we\u2019re counting pennies even though we both have jobs,\u201d she said of her pandemic predicament.  <\/p>\n<p>In fact, customers may be as\u00a0cash-str<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed as employees at inexpensive pizza parlors, burger joints and taco spots, which vastly outnumber fine-dining locations. Guilt alert: Tips for the floor crew aren\u2019t usually shared with low-paid cooks and dishwashers.<\/p>\n<p>Tamarind Tribeca owner Avtar Walia said tipping at his elegant Indian eatery has been \u201cabsolutely normal\u201d except for \u201conce in a blue moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pattern can vary even at\u00a0 the same place. Customers at giant Upper West Side trattoria Carmine\u2019s tip \u201c25% indoors and 30% outdoors,\u201d owner Jeffrey Bank said.<\/p>\n<p>Why more outside? \u201cWhen you see the waiter coming to the table in a black winter jacket instead of a black vest, how in good con<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> are you not leaving a bigger tip?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But those with means can make a waiter\u2019s night \u2014 or week. Pastis general manager Susan Lee said \u201can overwhelming majority\u201d of her guests \u201ctip above and beyond\u201d \u2014 and a few even more. Among the fortunate recipients was a Pastis waitress who scored tips of $1,000 and $500 from a woman who spent a mere $300 and $150 on different nights with her husband and friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the lucky one,\u201d chuckled the waitress, who didn\u2019t wish to be named. \u201cThey were very nice customers, but when they paid the check, I got surprised. I went back to them to make sure it wasn\u2019t a mistake. She said to me, \u2018You deserve it.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n<p>And at\u00a0uptown French institution La Goulue, a woman who lunched at an outdoor table \u201cleft a $500 tip on a check of under $100,\u201d general manager Mohamed Daoud marveled.
