Back in 2019, Judd Apatow teamed up with Billy Eichner<\/strong> to produce a yet-to-be-titled romantic comedy starring and written by the\u00a0Billy on the Street<\/em> host and\u00a0comedia<\/a>n. Two years later, that rom-com now has a name and a release date, and a history-making precedent that will set it apart from the rest of the genre.<\/p>\n

Universal has set the release date for\u00a0Bros<\/em><\/strong>, which it is touting as the first major studio movie to star and be written by an openly gay man, for August 12, 2022<\/strong>, The Wrap<\/a> reports. Eichner is starring in the film, which he is co-writing with\u00a0Nicholas Stoller<\/strong> (Neighbors, Forgetting Sarah Marshall<\/em>), who is also directing the rom-com.
\nPer The Wrap, the film is described as a \u201csmart, swoony and heartfelt comedy about finding sex, love and romance amidst the madness.\u201d It features two gay leads \u201cas they each try to maybe, possibly, probably stumble towards love\u2026that is, if they can find the time. They\u2019re both very busy.\u201d\u00a0The actor who will portray Eichner\u2019s on-screen love interest has not been announced yet.<\/p>\n

Apatow produces\u00a0Bros<\/em> with Stoller and Joshua Church, the co-producer for\u00a0Trainwreck<\/em> and\u00a0Step Brothers<\/em>, with Eichner serving as\u00a0executive producer on the film.<\/p>\n

Eichner, who initially carved out a comedy career for himself as the host of his man-on-the-street comedy game<\/a> show\u00a0Billy on the Street<\/em>, ambushing unsuspecting New Yorkers in clips that frequently went viral, has been steadily growing his acting career with roles in\u00a0Parks and Recreation, <\/em>the Lion King<\/em> remake, and most notably in the Hulu comedy\u00a0Difficult People<\/em>, which aired for three critically acclaimed season. He has worked with Stoller before on\u00a0Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising<\/em> and the Netflix sitcom\u00a0Friends From College<\/em>, but has been using his platform more recently to advocate for expanded roles for LGBTQ actors in Hollywood, such as with the\u00a0Man in the Box<\/em> biopic he boarded last year.<\/p>\n

In an\u00a0interview with\u00a0Variety<\/em><\/a>, Eichner discussed\u00a0the significance of being the first openly gay man to write and star in a rom-com for a major Hollywood studio. \u201cI\u2019m honored that it\u2019s me, but it should have been someone else 30 or 40 years ago,\u201d he said. \u201cI hear people talking about diversity and inclusion, but I often see gay people left out of those conversations. The comedy community, which has always been such a straight man\u2019s game, has not been kind to openly gay men.\u201d<\/p>\n

We can likely expect more casting new in the months to come for\u00a0Bros<\/em>, before it hits theaters next summer.
