An 85-year-old cold case involving a missing man is the subject of the new Paramount+ docuseries \u201cFor Heaven\u2019s Sake.\u201d<\/p>\n

The eight-episode arc follows creators and stars Mike Mildon and Jackson Rowe as they probe at the 1934 disapp<\/a>earance of Mike\u2019s great-great-uncle, Harold Heaven<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really was just a campfire story my entire life,\u201d Mildon, 26, told The Post. \u201cI don\u2019t remember exactly how old I was [when I first heard Harold\u2019s story]. It\u2019s probably going back to very young, like 5 or 6.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the winter of 1934, Heaven abruptly left his cottage in Haliburton County, Ontario, in the middle of the night. The door was left open with the keys in the lock\u00a0 \u2014 and he was never seen again. The lakes and forests were subsequently searched, but there were no footprints in the snow and no sign of him \u2014 or a body \u2014 ever turned up.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been so many theories and so much hearsay, and that\u2019s all we had to go off of,\u201d said Mildon. \u201cWe really learned the dos and dont\u2019s of being amateur detectives.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series explores the various possibilities about what happened to Heaven, including suiicide, running away or being murdered \u2014 with his body easily hidden by road-blasting that was going on in the region at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure which theory was true [going in],\u201d said Rowe. \u201cBut it seemed that there was a cover up going on and some group of people knew the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mildon and Rowe are comedia<\/a>ns (\u201cTrophy Husbands\u201d), which helped get \u201cAmerican Vandal\u201d creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault onboard as exec-producers \u2014 but neither Mildon nor Rowe have backgrounds in forensics, reporting or investigative work.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMike and I met in 2013 taking classes at Second City, and we started making sketch videos,\u201d said Rowe, 30. \u201cWe have a love for filmmaking and comedy. Something we love to do with our films is take a\u00a0 genre that already exists and put our spin on it. This was our first foray into true crime. We came in with a healthy respect for it and a healthy desire to do it justice. We\u2019re such fans of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both say that HBO\u2019s \u201cThe Jinx\u201d and \u201cThe Staircase\u201d (Netflix) are among their favorites in the genre. While a duo of funnymen with a personal connection to the case makes for an unusual pair of detectives, Mildon and Rowe said their unconventional background came in handy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it definitely helps,\u201d said Rowe. \u201cWe\u2019re used to improvising, thinking on our feet and making people laugh. We\u2019re making people feel comfortable and setting a tone for an interview.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Mildon, it was also a chance to interview his own relatives about the mysterious story of Harold\u2019s disappearance. Among others, his grandfather Ted Heaven and his aunt Irene Heaven appear in the series to offer their testimonies onscreen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe good thing about having Jackson with me is he could come with an outsider perspective and get rid of that family bias,\u201d said Mildon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Heaven family were more than happy to open their doors for the interviews [and] I was nervous to talk to my family and bring up the past,\u201d he said. \u201cThere was a lot of trust involved \u2014 but now I look back on the experience and feel blessed that I got to have that sitdown time with all those relatives and talk about our family history. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s so much warmth in that.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
