Alicia Silverstone<\/strong> is back and she\u2019s ready to fight some sharks in\u00a0The Requin<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0Saban Films just hooked themselves the U.S. rights to the pic, which stars Silverstone and\u00a0James Tupper<\/strong> (Big Little Lies<\/em>) as a couple on a romantic getaway to Vietnam. A tropical storm blows away their seaside villa and leaves them stranded and injured. And if that weren\u2019t bad enough, a bunch of hungry great white sharks has them surrounded.<\/p>\n

Deadline has the scoop on\u00a0The Requin<\/em>, a new shark movie starring Alicia Silverstone (requin<\/em> is the French word for shark, as I\u2019ve just learned thanks to Google translate). The film has already been shot and is currently in post-production. It will arrive in\u00a0June now that Saban Films picked up the U.S. rights.\u00a0Le-Van Kiet<\/strong> (Furie<\/em>) wrote and directed the project, while Ellen Wander and Jordan Dykstra of Film Bridge International produced. Deadline adds that the movie features \u201cnearly 1,000 VFX shots,\u201d so that\u2019s something to look forward to, I guess! It was shot at\u00a0Universal Studios in Orlando. If only they had kept the\u00a0Jaws<\/em> ride intact there \u2013 then\u00a0The Requin<\/em> wouldn\u2019t have needed to build any sets.
\nThe Requin<\/em> \u201cfollows a couple on a romantic getaway in Vietnam, who find themselves stranded at sea after a massive tropical storm sweeps away their seaside villa. With the husband maimed and dying, the wife must fight the elements alone, while great white sharks circle below.\u201d And I say sign me the hell up. I\u2019m always down for a fun sharksploitation flick, and I like that this one has Alicia Silverstone in it. Alicia Silverstone vs. some sharks? Who\u00a0doesn\u2019t<\/em> want to see that? While this sounds similar to other shark films like\u00a0The Shallows<\/em> and\u00a0Open Water<\/em> (which also involved a couple threatened by sharks), there\u2019s bound to be something new here worth checking out.<\/p>\n

Silverstone rose to fame in the \u201990s, especially after her star-making turn in\u00a0Clueless<\/em>. While she may not be as prominent as she was back in the day, Silverstone has continued to work steadily over the years. In 2017 she app<\/a>eared in The Killing of a Sacred Deer<\/em>\u00a0and has had roles in\u00a0The Lodge<\/em> and\u00a0Valley Girl <\/em>(her turn in The Lodge<\/em> is particularly memorable). She also co-starred in Netflix\u2019s\u00a0The Baby-Sitters Club<\/em> last year and is lending her voice to the upcoming animated Netflix series<\/a>\u00a0Masters of the Universe: Revelation<\/em>. And now she\u2019s fighting sharks. That\u2019s cinema, folks.<\/p>\n
