Who cares\u2026something is!<br \/>\n<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article__subhead\" itemprop=\"alternativeHeadline\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Streaming_hasnt_killed_the_theater_experience_a_rattled_industry_hopes\"><\/span>\n  Streaming hasn\u2019t killed the theater experience, a rattled industry hopes<br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"column column--full article__content\">\n<div id=\"js-article__body\" class=\"article__body article-wrap at16-col16 barrons-article-wrap\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0000190336\">\n<div class=\"barrons-article-ad-wrapper\">\n<div data-track=\"barrons-article-ad-wrap\" class=\"barrons-article-ad sticky_item\">\n<div class=\"barrons-main-article-ad-target sticky_target body_ad\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       What\u2019s at the movies tonight?<\/p>\n<p> Well, the fact that there\u2019s anything at all at the movies, that\u2019s big <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> in New York City, where the cinemas have been dark, along with most other out-of-the-apartment entertainment options, since COVID-19 tightened its grip last March.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       But with the multiplexes (and the few remaining single screens) finally allowed to reopen this weekend, there\u2019s another question that might as well be plastered on the big marquee:<\/p>\n<p>Are moviegoers ready to go again?<\/p>\n<p>All this needs to be hedged, of course. Not all the theaters are back. A couple of shaky independents didn\u2019t survive the virus. Some chains are still playing wait-and-see. And no theaters will be packed this weekend. As the doors swing open, you\u2019re guaranteed to have plenty of room to rest your bathtub-sized buttery popcorn on the seat beside you. Capacity is strictly limited to 25% \u2014 and never more than 50 people per screen.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been a long year for Paul Dergarabedian, but he said he\u2019s finally seeing good reason for hope, and New York is a big part of it. As senior <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> analyst for the media measurement and analytics company Comscore<br \/>\n        SCOR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202855400\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-9.29%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Dergarabedian follows the movie industry like a hawk, poring over marketing budgets, per-screen performances and box-office reports, and looking for trends in all of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m optimistic,\u201d he said. \u201cWe could be in a much worse position if New York were not reopening. The biggest movie markets have to reopen before the industry can get back on track.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are two key pieces to a post-COVID recovery, according to the analyst. \u201cThe movie industry needs the availability of theaters, and the top studios need to be emboldened and confident enough to put brand new, big, expensive movies in them. But with the second-biggest movie market \u2014 second only to Los Angeles \u2014 opening now, that\u2019s a big deal. We may not see an overnight return to glory. But it\u2019s a very important step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also see:<\/strong> U.S. COVID-19 death toll tops 520,000 as Dr. Fauci cautions against reopening too soon<\/p>\n<p>After a year of falling in fresh love with video streaming, the studios do seem to be putting their toes back into the theaters. There\u2019s a big Disney<br \/>\n        DIS,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203410047\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.04%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       film, \u201cRaya and the Last Dragon<em>,\u201d<\/em> opening in theaters this weekend. \u201cI\u2019ll be looking closely at those numbers,\u201d Dergarabedian said. And the animated reboot of cat-and-mouse favorite \u201cTom and Jerry\u201d hit theaters in Chicago, Phoenix, Houston and elsewhere a week ago and did far better than anyone had predicted, even though it was also available on streaming.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cNow, we\u2019ll have the horsepower of New York City,\u201d Dergarabedian said.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, the studios aren\u2019t all in yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing 2 America,\u201d Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall\u2019s sequel to their 1988 immigrant blockbuster, was originally supposed to be released in theaters by Paramount Pictures. But because of the lockdowns, Paramount sold distribution rights to Amazon<br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.77%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       Studios, whose marketing executives orchestrated a massive digital release on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The film is getting middling reviews. So who knows what kind of business it might have done in a theater-only release. But it\u2019s a beloved comedy franchise that fans have gone without for 34 years, and (New York alert) it\u2019s partly set in Queens. File that under \u201cmissed opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t miss:<\/strong> Cuomo responds to harassment scandal: \u2018I\u2019m not going to resign\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But some kind of corner is seemingly being turned. The percentage of American theaters that are open jumped from 38 two weeks to 42 a week ago, according to Comscore\u2019s count. With New York included, it could be 45, edging toward 50, after this weekend. The 63 theaters in the five boroughs account for only 3% of the screens in America. But the larger New York metro market pushes that to 7.4%, and New York has an even more important role: As a media center, a culture magnet and a finance hub, it is irreplaceable as a creator of movie buzz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ability to sit on the couch and push a button is really <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ealing,\u201d Dergarabedian said, \u201cbut it is not the only experience we want to have in terms of entertainment. It\u2019s all freedom of choice. Even when movies are available at home and simultaneously in theaters, people are still going to the theaters in bigger numbers than we thought they might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more: <\/strong>Why cinema will survive the coronavirus pandemic<\/p>\n<p>Theaters, he said, won\u2019t be killed by home streaming any more than restaurants will perish because of Seamless, Chow Now, Uber<br \/>\n        UBER,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/211348248\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+4.65%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       Eats and the other food-delivery apps. Eating at home isn\u2019t the same as going out to dinner any more than Netflix<br \/>\n        NFLX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202353025\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.00%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       is the same as Saturday night at the movies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat movie theater is a carefully curated, special experience,\u201d Dergarabedian said. \u201cThere is nothing else like it. Part of what makes a movie theater so cool \u2014 that it\u2019s communal, that it\u2019s immersive \u2014 doesn\u2019t work in a pandemic.\u201d But as the pandemic passes, \u201cmovie theater will return to glory and learn to live with the streaming options. It\u2019s a different world now.
