So NHL referees are kind of done with policing the game<\/a>, that\u2019s pretty much it, amirite?<\/p>\n

The Capitals\u2019 Tom Wilson, flashing that lifetime get-out-of-jail-free card with which he has been endowed by the laughably named Department of Player Safety, rammed Brandon Carlo\u2019s head into the glass on Friday and the league immedia<\/a>tely went into contortions attempting to find the technicality to get the Washington predator off.<\/p>\n

See \u2026 see right there \u2026 when you slow it down, he brushes Carlo\u2019s wrist, glove-first \u2026 no, slow it down more \u2026 you see \u2026 ?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

That is what was going on in the aftermath of the hit, on which referees Dean Morton and Pierre Lambert called no penalty on the play, which sent the Bruins\u2019 Carlo off to the hospital.<\/p>\n

But on Saturday, in what was believed a response to the firestorm set off in response to this example of blind justice, the league invited Wilson for an in-person hearing via video conference that could \u2014 that is the operative word \u2014 yield a suspension of at least five games.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll see, but it sounds as if commissioner Gary Bettman might finally have had enough of this.<\/p>\n

There is more, though, for Bettman to address if he wants to get into the weeds.<\/p>\n
