{"id":19639,"date":"2020-07-02T17:44:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-02T14:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/florida-state-university-tells-staff-they-cant-care-for-kids-while-working-remotely\/"},"modified":"2020-07-02T17:44:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-02T14:44:00","slug":"florida-state-university-tells-staff-they-cant-care-for-kids-while-working-remotely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/florida-state-university-tells-staff-they-cant-care-for-kids-while-working-remotely\/","title":{"rendered":"#Florida State University tells staff they can\u2019t care for kids while working remotely"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Florida State University tells staff they can\u2019t care for kids while working remotely<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                        Florida State University has informed its employees that as of Aug. 7 they will no longer be allowed to care for their children while working from home during the coronavirus pandemic, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn March 2020, the University communicated a temporary exception to policy which allowed employees to care for children at home while on the Temporary Remote Work agreement,\u201d the FSU administration\u2019s email to staff read, The Lily reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEffective Aug. 7, 2020, the University will return to normal policy and will no longer allow employees to care for children while working remotely,\u201d added the memo, which was sent Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Jenny Root, an assistant professor of special education at FSU who has a 7-month-old daughter and 4-year-old son, told The Lily that she was puzzled by the \u201cbizarre\u201d missive from the school, particularly since her boss had been very supportive as she juggled child care and work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy initial thought was, \u2018Well, what am I supposed to do with [my kids]?\u201d Root, who has been pumping breast milk, told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Her boy\u2019s day care center had opened up for a few weeks, but was shut down again after one of the providers came into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, according to The Lily.<\/p>\n<p>With the contagion spreading across the Sunshine State, Root said she wasn\u2019t sure she\u2019d want to put her kids in day care even if she could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of us are enjoying this,\u201d she said. \u201cIt makes me feel like I\u2019m failing at everything I do.\u201d The university, she said, is \u201cacting like they gave us this privilege to watch our children while we worked \u2014 when that\u2019s literally what I had to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renisha Gibbs, FSU\u2019s associate vice president for human resources, told The Lily in a statement: \u201cAs FSU looks toward resuming normal campus operations \u2014 as conditions allow \u2014 we felt a responsibility to provide our employees notice of our intention to return to our standard telecommuting agreement that requires dependent or child-care arrangements while working remotely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cIf employees do not have day care options or choose not to send their children to school in the fall, they should work with their supervisors to identify a flexible work schedule that allows them to fulfill their work duties and their family responsibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The university faced a backlash on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> by users who slammed it for the sexist nature of the new policy, since it will almost certainly affect women more than men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven in the most egalitarian-meaning households, the domestic sphere will still fall primarily on women\u2019s shoulders,\u201d Caitlyn Collins, a sociologist who studies gender and families at Washington University in St. Louis, told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Gibbs sent out a new email that specifies that the telecommuting policy \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lies to employees whose job duties require them to be on campus full-time during normal business hours \u2026 and is intended to create flexible work arrangements that serve both the needs of the employee and their work unit,\u201d WCTV reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have not typically required employees who are already regularly performing their job remotely, or a combination of on-campus and remote work (e.g. faculty) to enter into a Telecommuting Agreement, nor were those employees required to complete the Temporary Remote Work Agreement at the beginning of the COVID-19 emergency,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, the University reverting back to normal policy does not affect their regular work arrangement,\u201d Gibbs added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that our local public schools are planning to resume in-person instruction next month and local daycare centers are open throughout the county, FSU is also shifting back to normal policy,\u201d the message said, adding that staffers can request \u201ca temporary modification to any on-campus work assignment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some workers said the policy targets only those who don\u2019t have the job security of tenured professors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue, I imagine to the way this has gone viral on social media \u2026 a slight retraction was issued today, which actually only compounds the initial problem,\u201d Cathy McClive, a history professor, told The Lily in an email.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe policy now applies to staff not faculty \u2014 so those without tenure are in the most precarious positions,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Miranda Waggoner, a sociology professor at FSU who is untenured, said the local school district is giving families the option of either virtual or in-person learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that cases are surging, many parents might choose a digital learning experience,\u201d Waggoner, who has a 6-year-old son, told The Lily, adding that she hasn\u2019t decided whether to send her son back to school.<\/p>\n<p>But even tenured professors, who won\u2019t be directly affected by the policy, are deeply worried about the message Friday\u2019s email sends about the school\u2019s priorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a mother, it\u2019s difficult to know that the university really doesn\u2019t understand what it takes to be a mother,\u201d Katrinell Davis, a tenured sociology and African American studies professor, told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>She said she doubted that any women \u201cworking a split shift between work and home\u201d were involved in working on the new policy because they would have called it out as \u201cunrealistic\u201d \u2014 something that \u201cworks on Mars, but not on planet Earth.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/07\/02\/fsu-tells-staff-they-cant-care-for-kids-while-working-remotely\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Source<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>If you want to read more <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> articles, you can visit our <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">General category.<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>if you want to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp;
