We take a look at some of these forgotten classics.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Origins_of_Microsoft_Home\"><\/span>The Origins of Microsoft Home<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the 1980s, Microsoft pushed heavily for the future of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CD-ROM\">CD-ROM<\/a> format, even organizing the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/44427400?seq=1\">first major industry conference on CD-ROM<\/a> in 1986. In a time before the internet could deliver unlimited research materials to your PC, the CD-ROM medium, with its massive 650 megabyte capacity per disc, promised to bring large reference works and multimedia to home computers.<\/p>\n<p>After the successful release of the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Encarta\">Microsoft Encarta<\/a> CD-ROM encyclopedia in March 1993, Microsoft <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/products.kitsapsun.com\/archive\/1993\/10-01\/287560_microsoft_tailors_software_to_h.html\">launched the \u201cMicrosoft Home\u201d brand<\/a> under its consumer products division in October of that same year. Led by Patty Stonesifer, the Home brand would encompass hardware products like mice and dozens of entertainment and educational titles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-715860\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/microsoft_dogs_title.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Each Microsoft CD-ROM title was a lavish production, with hyperlinks between slides of interactive information. They often involved audio narration, music, and short video clips. For some titles, Microsoft used material licensed from publisher <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DK_(publisher)\">Dorling Kindersley<\/a> (DK), which is known for its richly illustrated educational reference books.<\/p>\n<p>Today, with resources like Wikipedia and YouTube at our fingertips (thanks to the internet), it\u2019s hard to imagine a time when companies produced rich multimedia reference products frozen in time on CDs\u2014even for people who lived through the era.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-715861 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/microsoft_gardening_cd_cover.jpg\" alt=\"Microsoft Complete Gardening CD jewel box.\" width=\"650\" height=\"502\" data-credittext=\"Benj Edwards\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Benj Edwards<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Microsoft\u2019s CD-ROM products were well-received, and they filled an essential gap between the reference book era and the internet. A generation of kids grew up loving them, and industry critics, such as Byte columnist <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jerry_Pournelle\">Jerry Pournelle,<\/a> recommended them. \u201cYou can\u2019t afford to be without a current Microsoft Home Products catalog,\u201d he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vintageapple.org\/byte\/pdf\/199508_Byte_Magazine_Vol_20-08_Inside_the_Mind_of_Microsoft.pdf\">wrote in 1995<\/a>. \u201cThey\u2019re adding really good titles every few weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at a handful of those titles below.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Microsoft_Dinosaurs_1993\"><\/span><em>Microsoft Dinosaurs<\/em> (1993)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-715867\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/microsoft_dinosaurs_title_screen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"468\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>As one of the earliest Microsoft Home CD-ROM products, <em>Microsoft Dinosaurs<\/em> set a template that later titles followed. You can explore dinosaurs by species, see where they lived by location on a map, and even <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dgOZUPUGuwY\">watch narrated cartoon videos<\/a> about them. <em>Dinosaurs<\/em> received <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atarimagazines.com\/compute\/issue160\/106_Microsoft_Dinosaurs.php\">great reviews<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> and sold fairly well, setting the stage for future Microsoft CD-ROM releases.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Microsoft_Dangerous_Creatures_1994\"><\/span><em>Microsoft Dangerous Creatures<\/em> (1994)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-715866\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/microsoft_dangerous_creatures.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Unlike <em>Microsoft Dinosaurs<\/em>, <em>Dangerous Creatures<\/em> focused on living animals that could hurt or kill you in the present day (such as piranhas, scorpions, bears, and tigers), which made it a particularly popular title during the mid-1990s. You can <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uSxCwKEFeEI\">watch narrated videos of the animals in action<\/a> (including a mosquito drinking blood) and read illustrated entries about them.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Microsoft_Dogs_1995\"><\/span><em>Microsoft Dogs<\/em> (1995)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-715865\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/microsoft_dogs_contents.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This comprehensive CD-ROM guide includes <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F106dVgSq9o\">images, videos, and even audio bark clips<\/a> of 250 different dog breeds. You can also learn about the evolutionary origins of man\u2019s best friend, or simply how to groom and feed them properly. In 1995, Entertainment Weekly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/article\/1995\/08\/25\/microsoft-dogs\/\">gave this title a \u201cB\u201d grade<\/a>, which was fairly impressive for a reference CD at the time.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Microsoft_Wine_Guide_1995\"><\/span><em>Microsoft Wine Guide<\/em> (1995)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-715859\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/microsoft_wine_guide_title.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Wine expert Oz Clarke hosts this guide to types of wine and how to drink them (including explanations regarding all the glass shapes and which regions produce which varietals). As Clarke <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wB_MZa0MgfQ\">says in an animated video on the title screen<\/a>, \u201cThere\u2019s never been a better time to be a wine drinker.\u201d This timeless piece of advice is as true today as it was in 1995, which proves that <em>Microsoft Wine Guide<\/em> will never truly become obsolete.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Microsoft_Complete_Gardening_1996\"><\/span><em>Microsoft Complete Gardening<\/em> (1996)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-715858\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/microsoft_complete_gardening_flower.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"491\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>After producing <em>Microsoft Complete Baseball<\/em> and <em>Microsoft Complete NBA Basketball<\/em>, Microsoft <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/1996\/02\/07\/microsoft-introduces-two-new-interactive-titles-for-the-home\/\">followed up those titles<\/a> with the next logical CD-ROM: <em>Microsoft Complete Gardening<\/em>. This guide includes a plant encyclopedia with photos and videos as well as information on insect pests. In 2000, icangarden.com <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icangarden.com\/document.cfm?task=viewdetail&amp;itemid=1420&amp;categoryid=12\">gave this title a mixed review<\/a>, citing slowness and tedious guides. From 1993 to 1997, Microsoft released at least 32 reference titles on CD-ROM (some in multiple yearly editions), including dozens of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s, productivity titles, and more.
