Here\u2019s a neat trick: You can make your Mac announce the time out loud on the quarter-hour, the half-hour, or every hour using a hidden feature in System Preferences. Here\u2019s how to set it up.<\/p>\n

First, open System Preferences by clicking the App<\/a>le icon in the upper-left corner of your screen and selecting \u201cSystem Preferences\u201d from the menu that appears.<\/p>\n

In \u201cSystem Preferences\u201d in macOS Catalina or earlier, click \u201cDate & Time.\u201d On macOS 11 Big Sur or later, click \u201cDock & Menu Bar.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re running Catalina or earlier, click the \u201cClock\u201d tab in \u201cDate & Time\u201d preferences. In Big Sur or later, scroll down the \u201cDock & Menu Bar\u201d sidebar and click \u201cClock.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019re on \u201cClock\u201d preferences, put a checkmark beside \u201cAnnounce the time.\u201d Then, using the drop-down menu, you can customize if you want your Mac to announce the time on the hour, on the half-hour, or on the quarter-hour.<\/p>\n

For example, if you select \u201cOn the quarter-hour,\u201d you\u2019ll hear announcements at 2:00 p.m., 2:15 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 2:45 p.m. The voice will say, \u201cIt\u2019s two o\u2019clock\u201d or \u201cIt\u2019s two forty-five.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you\u2019d like to change the voice that speaks the time out loud, click the \u201cCustomize Voice\u201d button. On that screen, you can choose a male or female voice and also adjust the speech rate.<\/p>\n

After that, close System Preferences, and you\u2019re done. As long as you have your system volume turned up, you\u2019ll hear the time spoken at the intervals you set. Have fun!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
