As the digital bodies move across the virtual stage, viewers can switch between the different AI identities to expose the methods used to generate them.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Welcome to The Zizi Show\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sn9w8ECVT1k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\nThe project is the brainchild of artist Jake Elwes, who created the\u00a0virtual cabaret by training a neural network on videos of 13 drag performers.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere are drag kings, queens, biologically female drag queens, trans drag kings and queens, drag monsters,\u201d he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newreal.cc\/magazine-database\/project-profile-the-zizi-show-when-drag-meets-machine-learning\">said<\/a>. \u201cWe also made sure there was diversity in terms of race, gender, sexuality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Over time, the neural network iterated and improved its outputs until it could produce realistic deepfakes of the performers.<\/p>\n<p>The cast members range from\u00a0Me, \u201ca\u00a0master of lip sync with an aesthetic best viewed through a pair of sunglasses,\u201d to Oedipussi Rex, \u201c<span>a beardy drag barbarian, with acts as wildly inconsistent as the Gods themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Elwes also generated a shape-shifting host for the show called Zizi by<span>\u00a0simultaneously training\u00a0the neural network on images of all the artists. We asked experts and animal owners]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The show is the latest iteration of the Zizi Project, a collection of artworks that explore the intersection of AI and drag.<\/p>\n<p>The project began in 2019 with\u00a0\u201cZizi \u2013 Queering the Dataset,\u201d which investigates how facial recognition algorithms\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/324670607_Gender_Recognition_or_Gender_Reductionism_The_Social_Implications_of_Embedded_Gender_Recognition_Systems\">misidentify non-cisgender people<\/a> due to biases in their training data.<\/p>\n<p>Elwes disrupted these biases by re-training a neural network on 1,000 images of drag performers.
