Ba-dee, a dee, that\u2019s all, Pep\u00e9!\u00a0<\/p>\n

This week, Pep\u00e9 Le Pew, the handsy French skunk of \u201cLooney Tunes,\u201d became the latest cultural fixture to get the guillotine when he was axed from the upcoming movie \u201cSpace Jam: A New Legacy,\u201d amid shouts that the cartoon character is a rapist.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dave Chapp<\/a>elle first pointed out Pep\u00e9\u2019s pervy ways in a 2000 comedy special called \u201cKillin\u2019 Them Softly<\/a>.\u201d The comedia<\/a>n made a funny joke about him, we laughed and everybody moved on.<\/p>\n

I grant you, some of those gropey old Pep\u00e9 episodes can make you cringe nowadays as if they were part of a documentary about 2021 Albany. <\/p>\n

But before Warner Bros. turned the little guy into roadkill, couldn\u2019t they have first tried\u00a0to change up the character\u2019s image for the LeBron James-led sequel? Reportedly, in the cut scene he was going to learn something about consent<\/a>. Pep\u00e9 could\u2019ve morphed into a harmless flirt, or a pretentious Frenchman instead of a lech. <\/p>\n

Not this time. Le Pew is l\u2019histoire.<\/em> And, as you might imagine with an animated show that began in 1930, just about everyone and everything in \u201cLooney Tunes\u201d is objectionable by today\u2019s puritanical standards.<\/p>\n

Take Lola Bunny. In the new film, the fuzzy bombshell has been robbed of her hourglass figure and wears less form-fitting clothes to \u201cdesexualize\u201d her. Call her Gertrude Hare. There have also been demands from New York Times columnist Charles Blow to nix Speedy Gonzales<\/a>, a cute Mexican mouse.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Comedian Gabriel Iglesias, who voices Speedy in \u201cA New Legacy\u201d and whose parents, unlike Blow\u2019s, are from Mexico, defended his beloved rodent <\/a>on Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cU can\u2019t catch me cancel culture,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m the fastest mouse in all of Mexico.\u201d<\/p>\n

So far, Warner Bros. have kept Speedy in the film, but don\u2019t get your hopes up. The opinions of audiences no longer matter to Hollywood. Studios bow to lefty columnists and adjunct professors now in fear that, they too, might be canceled.<\/p>\n

Hollywood will soon see that canceling old cartoons is a twicky wabbit hole.<\/p>\n

Consider the cast of characters in the first \u201cSpace Jam\u201d film. There\u2019s Elmer Fudd, a hunter who totes around a rifle as he comically tries to murder Bugs Bunny. We can\u2019t have him glorifying gun violence, now, can we? Speaking of the sneaky rabbit, in a racist 1944 World War II propaganda episode short called \u201cNips the Nips<\/a>,\u201d Bugs says to a Japanese soldier, \u201cHere ya go, slant-eyes!\u201d<\/p>\n

OK, so Bugs and Elmer are fired. Who does that leave?<\/p>\n

Daffy Duck isn\u2019t squeaky clean, either. He gruesomely attempted suicide in the 1950 episode \u201cThe Scarlet Pumpernickel<\/a>.\u201d Playing a screenwriter who can\u2019t sell his movie to Warner Bros., the bird puts a gun to his temple, says,\u00a0\u201cThere was nothing for the Scarlet Pumpernickel to do but blow his brains out,\u201d and pulls the trigger. Thankfully, the bullet misses his head and goes straight through his hat. Still, we\u2019ll have to give suicide-joking Daffy the boot, too.<\/p>\n

Save us, kind, innocent, edgeless Porky Pig! Sorry, guys. Adorable Porky is most famous for his stutter, a condition that\u2019s been in the news<\/a> a lot lately. President Biden, who made the fact that he\u2019s mostly overcome his own speech impediment an odd selling point of his campaign, will surely come out and condemn poor Porky.<\/p>\n

There are so few pure \u201cLooney Tunes\u201d left, WB might have to cancel \u201cA New Legacy\u201d altogether. Tha-tha-that\u2019s all folks!\n <\/p><\/div>\n
