{"id":197986,"date":"2021-03-09T22:26:07","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T19:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/instagrams-algorithm-pushes-users-towards-covid-19-misinformation-study-finds\/"},"modified":"2021-03-09T22:26:07","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T19:26:07","slug":"instagrams-algorithm-pushes-users-towards-covid-19-misinformation-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/instagrams-algorithm-pushes-users-towards-covid-19-misinformation-study-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"#Instagram\u2019s algorithm pushes users towards COVID-19 misinformation, study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Instagram\u2019s algorithm pushes users towards COVID-19 misinformation, study finds<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                                Instagram\u2018s algorithm is recommending\u00a0COVID-19 and anti-vaccination misinformation\u00a0to potentially\u00a0millions of users, according to a new report.<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) used test\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0f0f0f;\">accounts<\/span>\u00a0to investigate the recommendations on Instagram\u2019s Explore page and new\u00a0Suggested Post\u00a0feature.<\/p>\n<p>They found that the tools\u00a0encourage\u00a0users to view\u00a0misinformation and then push those who engage with the posts towards other extremist content:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If a user follows anti-vaxxers, they are fed QAnon conspiracism and antisemitic hate; if they engage with conspiracies, they are fed electoral and anti-vaxx misinformation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The researchers generated the\u00a0recommendations by creating 15\u00a0Instagram profiles and following\u00a0different lists\u00a0of accounts,\u00a0from health authorities to anti-vaxxers.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read:\u00a0How do you build a\u00a0<span class=\"c-search__match\">pet<\/span>-friendly gadget? We asked experts and animal owners]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>They logged into the\u00a0Instagram accounts every day and recorded the recommendations they received.<\/p>\n<p>As the Suggested Posts feature doesn\u2019t trigger for new accounts that haven\u2019t interacted with posts, the users scrolled through their feeds and the Explore section, and liked random posts to generate suggested content.<\/p>\n<p>They then screenshot the\u00a0recommendations they got between 14 September to 16 November 2020.<\/p>\n<p>In total, Instagram recommended 104 posts containing misinformation. The only\u00a0profiles that weren\u2019t recommended misinformation\u00a0exclusively followed recognized health authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Imran Ahmed, the CEO of CCDH, said that Instagram is purposefully promoting extremist misinformation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Previous <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.socialmediatoday.com\/news\/new-study-shows-that-misinformation-sees-significantly-more-engagement-than\/555286\/\">research<\/a> shows that misinformation is shared and gets more engagement than truths on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>. Worse still, high engagement numbers <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/misinforeview.hks.harvard.edu\/article\/exposure-to-social-engagement-metrics-increases-vulnerability-to-misinformation\/\">increases the likelihood<\/a> neutral observers engage with the content. For Instagram and its algorithms, a click is a win, no matter the content.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>CCDH has published an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.counterhate.com\/fixinstagram\">open letter<\/a> to Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, which owns Instagram, urging him t<span>o disable and fix the \u201cbroken algorithm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In response to the report, a Facebook spokesperson said the research was five months out of date and based on \u201can extremely small sample size\u201d of 104 posts.<\/p>\n<p>However, Instagram users have pointed out that Instagram is still recommending misinformation today.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Facebook have this morning claimed that a study into dodgy recommended content on the Instagram platform done by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CCDHate?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CCDHate<\/a> was \u2018out of date\u2019 as changes had been implemented.
