During his visit, t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he heir to the throne <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jack_Royston\/status\/1369316459420205059?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gave a short speech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, saying, \u201cWe are all immensely proud of the role Black majority churches play. And it is of course a profound sorrow to me to know that Black communities have been hit particularly hard by this pernicious virus.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was one of those royal appearances that rarely makes headlines outside its community. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this was Charles\u2019s first public appearance since his son, Prince Harry, and daughter-in-law, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, alleged racism, callousness, neglect and cruelty on the part of the royal family and its administrators, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired on Sunday evening.\u00a0(Charles didn\u2019t comment on the interview when reporters asked about it.)\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since it aired, royal\u00a0officials, including<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the palace\u2019s\u00a0communications department, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RoyalReporter\/status\/1368955878607630341?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hunkered down, phones off<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as they figured out how to react to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the two-hour torrent of accusations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the couple, who now live in California<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A few hours after Charles\u2019s visit to the church, the Queen released a statement: \u201cThe whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.\u00a0 While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It goes almost without saying that those five sentences failed to dampen the controversy and speculation the pair stirred with their words and omissions. Some answers to key questions the interview has raised:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_Harry_and_Meghan_ever_return_to_being_working_royals\"><\/span><b>Can Harry and Meghan ever return to being working royals?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Officially, that door closed on Feb. 19, 2021, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when after an agreed-upon review a year after the couple stepped back from royal duty, the Queen issued a statement: \u201cThe Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of the royal family.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If that slammed door wasn\u2019t enough, the interview adds multiple deadbolts, because Harry described his experience as a royal in such scathing terms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI was trapped but I didn\u2019t know I was trapped,\u201d he said,\u201d within the system, like the rest of my family are. My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don\u2019t get to leave and I have huge compassion for that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The interview reminds me of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatriciaTreble\/status\/1368987650590445570?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a crucial scene in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hunt for Red October<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when the Soviet submarine captain ends any talk by other officers of unwinding their plot to hand over their sub to the Americans:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere will be no going back. Before we sailed, I mailed a letter to Adm. Padorin in which I announced our intention to defect.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the name of God, why?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen he reached the New World, Cort\u00e9s burned his ships. As a result, his men were well motivated.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_has_the_nature_of_this_interview_become_an_issue\"><\/span><b>Why has the nature of this interview become an issue?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oprah Winfrey gave a master class in celebrity interviewing. She let Harry and Meghan talk, but circled back to key moments, such as Meghan\u2019s thoughts of suicide while pregnant with Archie; or the racist comments expressed by an unnamed royal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cabout how dark his [Archie\u2019s] skin would be,\u201d as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meghan put it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The result made for riveting television.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet it was decidedly not a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> interview. It was <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/yashar\/status\/1368399805794324481?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">produced by Winfrey\u2019s company for the entertainment division of CBS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not the news division. That is a distinction with a difference: For one, news organizations regularly bar journalists from a story, an interview or the field if they have a conflict of interest, or even the appearance of one. Being personal friends with the interviewees is such a conflict.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, the conflict was so obvious that it was one of the first things Winfrey and Meghan discussed in the interview. Winfrey had occupied a prime seat at their 2018 wedding at Windsor Castle. In 2019, she announced a\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/live-feed\/prince-harry-partner-oprah-apple-tv-mental-health-series-1200852\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">partnership with Prince Harry on a mental health series <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for Apple TV\u00a0(which she mentioned during the interview), and in 2020 became <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oprahmag.com\/entertainment\/a34963406\/oprah-meghan-markle-christmas-gift\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their neighbour<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/dirt\/heirs-heiresses\/meghan-markle-prince-harry-buy-14-7-million-montecito-compound-1234733871\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sussexes bought a US$14-million estate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Santa Barbara. Her magazine, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says they \u201chave been friends for a few years;\u201d Winfrey revealed in an Instagram video that <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oprahmag.com\/entertainment\/a34963406\/oprah-meghan-markle-christmas-gift\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meghan had delivered a \u201cbasket of deliciousness\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in December<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including her \u201cnew drink of choice\u201d from Clevr, a firm Meghan had invested in that sells instant oat milk lattes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, most hard-news journalists have a stack of carefully collated questions and research notes in their lap so they can nail down claims and allegations during the interview, as\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British journalist <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily Maitlis did in her <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical 2019 dissection <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Prince Andrew\u2019s account and defences<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0of his relationship with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. That brutal, hour-long interview on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newsnight <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revealed a prince \u201cseemingly devoid of empathy for Epstein\u2019s victims and bewildered about how his gilded, privileged life has somehow ended up like this,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wrote at the time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The approach stands in contrast to Winfrey\u2019s softer style, honed through decades of interviews. While she frequently asked for more details, or to know who said what, she often moved on when Harry and Meghan failed to answer those queries.\u00a0(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My review, including a fact-check of some inaccuracies,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is here<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). As one journalist said to me, \u201cmuch of that interview would never have made it\u201d into a news magazine or program.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_were_the_after-effects_of_the_racism_allegation\"><\/span><b>What were the after-effects of the racism allegation?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meghan, the first woman of colour to marry a senior royal, said in the interview that, while pregnant with Archie, there were \u201cconcerns and conversations about how dark his [Archie\u2019s] skin would be.\u201d She says these remarks arose in \u201cseveral conversations,\u201d though she wouldn\u2019t say specifically with whom. \u201cI think that would be very damaging to them,\u201d she said, adding that the comments were \u201crelayed to me from Harry; those were conversations that the family had with him.\u201d Harry, meanwhile, told Winfrey he is \u201cnever going to share\u201d the specifics of that conversation, before adding: \u201cBut at the time it was awkward; I was a bit shocked.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are exceedingly serious allegations, which, because the person wasn\u2019t identified, now hang like a cloud of acid over the entire family. Sure enough, everyone is now speculating as to the name of the person or persons. (On Monday, Oprah clarified on behalf of the couple that it wasn\u2019t the Queen, or Prince Philip.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As British journalist <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrisshipitv\/status\/1369227649151873026?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nana Akua explained on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Morning Britain<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Tuesday, \u201cWhat was the context with regard to the colour of the child\u2019s skin? I myself have faced racism, so I support Meghan if people are being racist because that is just not acceptable on any level. But I think we need to be very clear about the context here. I have two mixed-race children. My son is called Ivory and we were all laughing and talking, \u2018What if he comes out really dark?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople make comments. It doesn\u2019t necessarily mean they are racist. It could be based on a lack of understanding and ignorance. But I do feel if there was any level of actual racism, then yes, that should be investigated. But it\u2019s not good enough to say, \u201cOh we\u2019re not going tell you who it is or what they said.\u2019 If you\u2019re going to bring it to the forefront, then who are they, what did they say, what was the context?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Canada_going_to_ditch_the_monarchy\"><\/span><b>Is Canada going to ditch the monarchy?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhither the maple leaf Crown\u201d is a perennial story that is lately back in the news, helped by the scandalous resignation of governor <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> Julie Payette. Polls here looked bad for the monarchy even before the Winfrey interview. One released last week by Research Co., found that 45 per cent of Canadians prefer an elected head of state to Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada\u2014a jump of 13 points from the previous year,<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/lifestyle\/canadians-desire-to-drop-monarchy-reaches-historic-level-poll-1.5330650\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CTV News reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Canada relationship with the Crown is undeniably an oddity: we have a head of state who doesn\u2019t live in Canada, and who hasn\u2019t visited in 11 years due to old age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> lit up during and after the interview with calls to abolish the Canadian monarchy, the question then becomes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to replace it and with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It won\u2019t be easy, even if there is the political will to make such a change. As Crown expert <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philippe Lagass<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00e9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Carleton University, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LagassePhilippe\/status\/1369271233070723073?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who has tweeted non-stop on the issue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since the interview<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LagassePhilippe\/status\/1369271233070723073?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explained<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes to the office of the Queen require the unanimous consent of the provinces, Commons, and Senate. So getting rid of the monarchy altogether is, well, tough.\u201d Though Lagass\u00e9 and others have ideas to reform the office in ways that may avoid that constitutional unanimity, whatever solution they devise would inevitably face\u00a0court or political challenges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And for anyone who wasn\u2019t an adult during the last rounds of constitutional crises, ask your relatives about those experiences\u2014about the anxieties and divisions they caused.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_happens_to_Harrys_relationship_with_his_brother_and_father\"><\/span><b>What happens to Harry\u2019s relationship with his brother and father?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her statement on Tuesday, the Queen said\u00a0<\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.\u201d Yet, during that interview, Harry laid down some harsh criticism in recalling the\u00a0onslaught of racism he and his wife faced from social media, the press and institutions. There were \u201cmany opportunities for my family to show some public support,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cNo one from my family ever said anything over those three years. That hurts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also revealed that his father \u201cstopped taking my calls\u201d while the Sussexes were in Canada, when they were in the early stages of trying to negotiate an exit from full-time royal duties. While Charles is now taking his calls, Harry said, \u201cthere is a lot to work through there. I feel really let down because he\u2019s been through something similar, he knows what pain feels like, and Archie is his grandson. But at the same time I will always love him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He admitted that he doesn\u2019t have a relationship with William, even though the brothers were famously close for years: \u201cI will continue to make it one of my priorities to try to heal that relationship. But they only know what they know\u2026.<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ebenezer_Peegah\/status\/1368759059885797376?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I love William to bits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
