And we call him that thanks to Dr. Seuss, who coined the word \u201cnerd\u201d in his 1950 book \u201cIf I Ran the Zoo\u201d (yes, one of the books his estate is pulling out of print). Duice\u2019s Anthony \u201cCreo-D\u201d Darlington has said that in the mid-1980s, he and his friends used pay phones to \u201ccall that booty\u201d \u2014 later shortened to making booty calls. Takashi Bufford, the co-screenwriter of the 1997 movie \u201cBooty Call,\u201d said that in the early \u201980s, he and his pals would make what they called late-night booty calls from bar phone booths. As for the word booty, that goes way back to the Elizabethan era, Keyes wrote, when it was \u201cslang for genitalia, a play on body.\u201d And Fats Waller co-wrote and recorded a song \u201cCome and Get It\u201d in 1941, with the line, \u201cI\u2019ve gotta get myself some booty.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wimp\"><\/span><strong>Wimp<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In her 1897 fairy tale collection, British children\u2019s book author Evelyn Sharp introduced a group of children who pulled pranks on others, but broke into tears when the same was done to them. She called them the Wymps. \u201cBefore long,\u201d Keyes told us, \u201cthis term, respelled \u2018wimps,\u2019 was <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lied to all manner of feckless individual.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gung-ho\"><\/span><strong>Gung-ho<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>During World War II Western observers in China heard a slogan used by Chinese worker-soldier teams \u2014 \u201ckung\u201d meaning work, and \u201cho,\u201d together. A Marine colonel, Evans Carlson used the Anglicized gung-ho as the \u201cBattle Cry of the Marine Raiders.\u201d A 1943 Hollywood film, \u201cGung Ho!\u201d about the real-life Makin Island raid in the Pacific, popularized the expression over here. Those on the decadelong project, which finished in 1938, used the working name Fiber 66. The president of the company proposed \u201cDelaware,\u201d for his firm\u2019s home state. Another wacky suggestion was \u201cDuparooh,\u201d an acronym for \u201cDuPont pulls a rabbit out of hat.\u201d The chair of a naming committee offered \u201cnorun,\u201d but the fabric did run. Another name, nuron, \u201cbrought moron to mind,\u201d wrote Keyes. Nilon was closer, but could be pronounced in different ways. Fred Hoyle, hired by the BBC in post-war Britain to discuss cosmology, \u201cnever imagined it would be taken seriously \u2026 become part of the lexicon, both scientific and lay,\u201d wrote Keyes. Sky &amp; Telescope magazine conducted a contest in 1993 to come up with a better name. But it\u2019s hard to imagine a hit TV show about physics nerd Sheldon Cooper and his pals called, say, \u201cThe Hubble Bubble Theory\u201d \u2014 just one of the 13,000 rejected entries.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bluetooth\"><\/span><strong>Bluetooth<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The wireless <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> that we all take for granted was named for a 10th century Scandinavian king who united Denmark and Norway. \u201cIt was just a jokey placeholder,\u201d said Keyes, but the name stuck. That king was nicknamed Bluetooth for his tooth so decayed that it looked blue.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tabloid\"><\/span><strong>Tabloid<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The type of newspaper that\u2019s more compact than its broadsheet rivals, and more clever and fun with its headlines, got its name from a medicine. In the 1880s, a British company came out with a medicine compressed into a tablet with the trademarked name Tabloid. In a sci-fi play Karel Capek wrote in 1920, work is done by \u201cmanufactured beings.\u201d According to Keyes, Capek complained to his brother, Josef, that he couldn\u2019t think of a name for these creatures. Josef said \u201crobot\u201d off the Czech word robota, for involuntary worker. The play that became \u201cR.U.R.\u201d was called Rossum\u2019s Universal Robots when it ran in London and New York.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Guy\"><\/span><strong>Guy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Originally intended as an insult, the term \u201cguy\u201d comes from Guy Fawkes, who was convicted and sentenced to death for his part in a plot to blow up Britain\u2019s House of Lords. Back then, Keyes wrote, such \u201cmiscreants\u201d became known as guys. The Oct. 26, 1809 issue of the New York Evening Post had a notice with the headline \u201cDISTRESSING.\u201d It told the tale of a \u201csmall elderly gentleman\u201d named Diedrich Knickerbocker who disappeared from a Mulberry Street hotel, leaving his possessions and an unpaid bill behind. That included a manuscript on the history of New York, which went on to be published.
