Think of an NFT like a digital collector\u2019s item. It\u2019s a unique digital object, and NFTs are exploding in popularity. But what is an NFT?<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"NFTs_Are_%E2%80%9CNon-Fungible_Tokens%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>NFTs Are \u201cNon-Fungible Tokens\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The acronym \u201cNFT\u201d stands for \u201cnon-fungible token.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An NFT is a token on a blockchain, but\u2014unlike typical cryptocurrency\u2014it\u2019s not fungible. A blockchain is a secure, collaborative ledger that keeps track of who owns what.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>What Is a &#8220;Blockchain&#8221;?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Does_%E2%80%9CNon-Fungible%E2%80%9D_Mean\"><\/span>What Does \u201cNon-Fungible\u201d Mean?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When something is fungible, it\u2019s interchangeable. For example, money is fungible. There\u2019s no difference between one U.S. dollar and another U.S. dollar.<\/p>\n<p>Gold is also considered to be a fungible commodity. One ounce of pure gold is equivalent to another ounce of pure gold. Shares of a company are fungible as well\u2014one share of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> is equivalent to another share of Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are fungible, too. One bitcoin is equivalent to another bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>When something is non-fungible, it\u2019s not interchangeable. For example, Leonardo da Vinci\u2019s\u00a0<em>Mona Lisa<\/em> is non-fungible. There is only one\u00a0original copy of the\u00a0<em>Mona Lisa<\/em> in the world.<\/p>\n<p>A copy of a trading card is non-fungible, too. It\u2019s a limited edition collectible. Each kitty is unique. A CryptoKitty is a \u201cdigital asset\u201d stored on a blockchain. Instead of the blockchain recording your ownership of a cryptocurrency token like Bitcoin (BTC) or Ether (ETH), it records your ownership of a specific, unique token that the kitty represents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwning\u201d a CryptoKitty works the same as \u201cowning\u201d a bitcoin or another cryptocurrency token. You own this digital asset because the collaborative blockchain says that you do\u2014or rather, the blockchain says that whoever has your private keys owns it. You can use your private keys to \u201cspend\u201d a cryptocurrency, assigning ownership of it to someone else in return for cash or services.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, you can use your private key to assign ownership of a CryptoKitty or another NFT to someone else. Perhaps you\u2019re exchanging the NFT for a fungible cryptocurrency (like Bitcoin), fungible cash (like U.S. dollars), or another NFT (like a different CryptoKitty). Ethereum is a cryptocurrency, but its blockchain can also store other data, like NFTs. CryptoKitties are technically ERC-721 tokens stored on the Ethereum blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>Other blockchains could also implement support for NFTs.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Are_Some_Other_Example_NFTs\"><\/span>What Are Some Other Example NFTs?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So let\u2019s recap: An NFT is a unique token stored on a blockchain. It\u2019s like a bitcoin or an altcoin, but instead of being an interchangeable currency, it\u2019s a unique digital item\u2014in the same sense that a bitcoin is a digital item.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at a few more examples of NFTs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is selling his first-ever tweet as an NFT. Someone is bidding <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/03\/07\/tech\/jack-dorsey-nft-twitter\/index.html\">$2.5 million<\/a> to own it.<\/li>\n<li>The NBA partnered with the maker of CryptoKitties to launch <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbatopshot.com\/\">NBA Top Shot<\/a>. You can buy highlight videos from NBA <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s in the form of NFTs. For example, a LeBron James highlight once sold for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-science-behind-behavior\/202103\/why-pay-200000-own-lebron-james-video-clip\">$200,000<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Grimes sold a variety of videos for a total of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/3\/1\/22308075\/grimes-nft-6-million-sales-nifty-gateway-warnymph\">$5.18 million<\/a>. A one-of-a-kind video named \u201cDeath of the Old\u201d went for $389,000, while nearly 700 copies were sold of shorter videos called \u201cEarth\u201d and \u201cMars\u201d for $7,500 each.<\/li>\n<li>A one-of-a-kind <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/22\/business\/nft-nba-top-shot-crypto.html\">Nyan Cat collectible<\/a> sold for about $580,000.<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/3\/8\/22319868\/taco-bell-nfts-gif-tacos-sell\">Taco Bell<\/a> sold NFTs for some reason.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those are just a few examples. After all, can\u2019t anyone take a screenshot of Jack Dorsey\u2019s first tweet\u2014or just read it on Twitter? Can\u2019t anyone watch those NBA clips online\u2014or <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download<\/a> copies of Grimes\u2019 videos with a quick right-click on a web page?<\/p>\n<p>Well yes, of course! Someone can also take a high-resolution photo of the\u00a0<em>Mona Lisa<\/em>. In fact, you can <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mona_Lisa\">view the\u00a0<em>Mona\u00a0<\/em><em>Lisa<\/em> <\/a>for free in your web browser, despite the fact that the\u00a0<em>Mona Lisa<\/em> is reportedly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_most_expensive_paintings\">valued<\/a> at nearly a billion dollars.<\/p>\n<p>What you\u2019re really paying for is a digital \u201ccertificate of authenticity\u201d that says you are the owner of the \u201coriginal\u201d copy. The blockchain, a public ledger that records who owns what, ensures that people can\u2019t just forge this certificate of authenticity.<\/p>\n<p>When you own that first-ever copy of the first-ever Jack Dorsey tweet, the blockchain says that you do. If you sell it to someone else in the future, that person will then own it. \u201cYou know, I own the original copy of the first Jack Dorsey tweet,\u201d they can say at cocktail parties.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Can_Something_Digital_Be_a_%E2%80%9CCollectible%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>How Can Something Digital Be a \u201cCollectible\u201d?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s a little difficult to understand how a copy of a Jack Dorsey tweet is worth $2.5 million. How is that a \u201ccollectible,\u201d and how is it worth so much money?<\/p>\n<p>Well, we live in a world where Charizard cards from the <em>Pok\u00e9mon Trading Card Game<\/em> can sell for more than <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hypebeast.com\/2021\/1\/charizard-pokemon-tcg-card-heritage-auctions-sale-350000-expected\">$350,000<\/a>. A copy of the Black Lotus card from\u00a0<em>Magic: The Gathering<\/em>\u2014signed by the original artist\u2014once sold for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2021\/1\/27\/22253079\/magic-the-gathering-black-lotus-auction-price-2021\">$511,100<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But just as NFTs are bits of data on a blockchain, those trading cards are just ink on a piece of paper.<\/p>\n<p>Like that signed copy of the Black Lotus card, that Jack Dorsey tweet is essentially a copy of the Jack Dorsey tweet signed by Jack Dorsey. It\u2019s a digital copy instead of a paper copy.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"But_How_Can_Digital_Collectibles_Have_Value\"><\/span>But How Can Digital Collectibles Have Value?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Anything is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.<\/p>\n<p>That Jack Dorsey tweet is worth $2.5 million because someone is willing to hand over that much cash for it. That person may be a big fan of Twitter and Jack Dorsey, or they may be betting that NFTs will increase in value and that people in the future will be willing to spend even more money to buy that one-of-a-kind signed tweet.<\/p>\n<p>However, that collectible is one of a kind. Even if Jack Dorsey sells a thousand more copies of his tweet, the first person will always have that original, first-ever copy of the tweet.
