This planet, discovered in 2019, could be the first world we know, outside the solar system, to have plate tectonics, which guides much of geology on our own world.<\/p>\n<p id=\"01d7\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">On Earth, plate tectonics drives earthquakes and builds mighty mountains, and it ferries materials from beneath the surface of the Earth, expelling material to the crust and atmosphere. This movement of the crustal plates of Earth also plays a crucial role in the return of these materials back underground, completing the geological process.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c53a\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This tectonic cycle, essential to driving climatic conditions on Earth, has never been observed in a world outside our<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck iz\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/gas-giants-bounce-around-and-collide-in-alien-solar-systems-26357bae238d?source=friends_link&amp;sk=c0176932dbee5b291f02c320564e7d10\">solar system<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2014 until now.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1cc8\" class=\"ja jb dt ce jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp jq jr js jt ju jv jw jx eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Running_Hot_and_Cold\"><\/span>Running Hot and Cold<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"0b6b\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb jy hd he hf jz hh hi hj ka hl hm hn kb hp hq hr kc ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Located just 45 light-years from Earth, LHS 3844b is thought to not have an atmosphere. This makes it slightly easier for astronomers to see tectonic processes taking place in this<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck iz\" href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/the-cosmic-companion\/episodes\/Elisabeth-Newton-and-the-TOI-451-Planetary-System-of-Exoplanets---The-Cosmic-Companion-March-2--2021-erbep8\">distant world<\/a>. Even under the best of conditions, these measurements are right at the edge of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"kd ke kf\">\n<p id=\"7f6f\" class=\"gy gz hx ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cThe first mission to Mars did not expect to find craters and river valleys, and yet they did. The first mission to Jupiter didn\u2019t expect to find ocean worlds and volcano worlds, but they did.\u201d \u2014 Alan Stern<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"373c\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck iz\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/the-volcanoes-of-io-seen-in-a-new-light\/\">volcano<\/a><span>\u00a0planet<\/span>, composed mostly of rock like our own world, is slightly larger than Earth.<\/p>\n<p id=\"476c\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This world orbits so close to its star that it is tidally locked \u2014 eternally facing one side toward its stellar parent, as the face on the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck iz\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/there-is-something-big-hiding-on-the-moon-what-is-it-1c5f8b811c95?source=friends_link&amp;sk=4321c1b31bbef21bcf1e6ee3a12f5fcf\">Moon<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>always points to Earth. Because of this, one side of LHS 3844b is constantly heated, while the other side remains perpetually frozen. While the sun-facing side of this world burns at temperatures of 800 degrees Celsius (1470 Fahrenheit), temperatures on the nightside drop to -250 C. Image credit: Universit\u00e4t Bern \/ University of Bern \/ Thibaut Roger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"ec7e\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Researchers suspected this extreme difference in temperatures might drive geological flows within this volcano planet.<\/p>\n<p id=\"999a\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">An international team led by Tobias Meier from the Center for Space and Habitability (CSH) at the University of Bern developed computer models to test the theory.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e1ad\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The models showed geology within LHS 3844b would likely result in mantle material flowing from one side of the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck iz\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/c5YZK4916d8\">exoplanet<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>to the other. Logically, one might think that hotter material on the \u201cdayside\u201d of the world would be lighter, making it more likely to rise on that side. However, some of the simulations showed just the opposite pattern, resulting in a nightside filled with volcanoes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>[Read:\u00a0<\/i><span class=\"s1\"><i>How do you build a pet-friendly gadget? Warm material, however, is less viscous \u2014 so even solid rock becomes more mobile when heated \u2014 and can readily flow towards the planet\u2019s interior,\u201d<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck iz\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unibe.ch\/news\/media_news\/media_relations_e\/media_releases\/2021\/media_releases_2021\/volcanoes_might_light_up_the_night_sky_of_this_planet\/index_eng.html\">Dan Bower<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>at the University of Bern explains.<\/p>\n<p id=\"60cc\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Upswelling of material on one side of the planet could lead to active volcanism across that hemisphere, researchers determined. This would be similar to processes that drive the highly-volcanic regions of Hawaii and Iceland. Such conditions could lead to the development of a volcano world, with one side covered in volcanoes, while the other half remains nearly barren of the features.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3d53\" class=\"ja jb dt ce jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp jq jr js jt ju jv jw jx eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Its_like_Pompeii_without_the_tourist_food%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>It\u2019s like Pompeii without the tourist food\u2026<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"9c6e\" class=\"gy gz dt ha b hb jy hd he hf jz hh hi hj ka hl hm hn kb hp hq hr kc ht hu hv dl eq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Evidence for<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ck iz\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/volcanoes-on-venus-still-active-after-all\/\">recent volcanism has been spotted on Venus<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and Io.
