Delayed from its January date, the 2021 Grammy Awards take place this Sunday, March 14. As schedules are finalized, statuettes buffed, and performers prep their <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ly distanced stage shows, Pitchfork is here with your one-stop shop compiling everything to look out for. Keep scrolling for all the controversies, snubs, and prospective landmarks that could go down on Sunday.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_will_the_show_look_like\"><\/span>What will the show\u00a0look like?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Good question. The Recording Academy has kept things vague with regard to COVID-safe staging and presentation, saying artists would \u201cbe coming together, while still safely apart, to play music for each other as a community.\u201d In practice, this means that, with the gala operating at reduced capacity, there will be a mix of live, in-person and pre-taped, video-linked <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earances.<\/p>\n<div class=\"consumer-marketing-unit consumer-marketing-unit--article-mid-content\" role=\"presentation\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"consumer-marketing-unit__slot consumer-marketing-unit__slot--article-mid-content consumer-marketing-unit__slot--in-content\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"journey-unit\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A recent <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/pro\/features\/inside-grammys-2021-show-ben-winston-1136850\/\"}' href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/pro\/features\/inside-grammys-2021-show-ben-winston-1136850\/\"><em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> article featuring Ben Winston (who is executive-producing his first Grammys telecast) revealed that the show will not take place at STAPLES Center, as it did last year. Instead, the Grammys will be filmed at \u201can undisclosed building in Los Angeles.\u201d The ceremony will feature four stages for performances and another for presenters, according to <em>RS<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cne-interlude-embed\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cPeople will perform while the other three or four artists watch, applaud, and enjoy\u201d from their own stages, Winston said. \u201cAs soon as that one finishes, the next one goes, the next one goes, and the next one goes. Every 45 minutes, you change out those stages, and you bring another four megastars into the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--in-content\">\n<div class=\"ad__slot ad__slot--in-content\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>There\u2019s a giant slate of performers for the evening, including (deep breath) Cardi B, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, HAIM, Megan Thee Stallion, Harry Styles, Bad Bunny, DaBaby, Dua Lipa, Post Malone, BTS, Brandi Carlile, Doja Cat, Brittany Howard, Miranda Lambert, Lil Baby, Chris Martin of Coldplay, John Mayer, Maren Morris, Mickey Guyton, and Roddy Ricch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-attr-viewport-monitor=\"inline-recirc\" class=\"inline-recirc-wrapper inline-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monitor-anchor\"><\/div>\n<p>Some late additions to the bill were Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, who just formed the group Silk Sonic. Their <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/03\/08\/entertainment\/bruno-mars-begs-grammys-to-let-him-perform-intl-scli\/index.html\"}' href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/03\/08\/entertainment\/bruno-mars-begs-grammys-to-let-him-perform-intl-scli\/index.html\">playful campaign<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LetSilkSonicThrive\/\"}' href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LetSilkSonicThrive\/\">#LetSilkSonicThrive<\/a>, aimed to get a last-minute invite to the show. It was successful.<\/p>\n<p>In recognition of financial hardship in the pandemic-struck live music industry, host Trevor Noah will also introduce workers from various independent venues to present awards.<\/p>\n<div id=\"landmarks\" tabindex=\"-1\">\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"History_in_the_making\"><\/span>History in the making<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>The 2021 Grammys could feature several landmark achievements, including one for Mickey Guyton, who has already made history as the first Black woman nominated as a solo country artist. Victory in the Best Country Solo Performance category would help \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ZXKsmR44IP8\"}' href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ZXKsmR44IP8\">Black Like Me<\/a>\u201d correct an unwritten rule, she has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/GMA\/Culture\/mickey-guyton-talks-historic-grammy-nomination-black-bigger\/story?id=76207154\"}' href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/GMA\/Culture\/mickey-guyton-talks-historic-grammy-nomination-black-bigger\/story?id=76207154\">said<\/a>, whereby woman are \u201conly allowed to sing about heartbreak and cute, fun songs, but God forbid we have other feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If she picks up enough victories in one day, Beyonc\u00e9 could break some records, too. With four wins, she would top Alison Krauss for most Grammys won by a female artist. If she wins five, she bests Quincy Jones\u2019 record as the living artist with the most Grammys. She\u2019ll need eight if she wants to take the record for most Grammys ever, which is held by the late classical conductor Sir Georg Solti.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, an illustrious slate of artists are up for their very first Grammy: Travis Scott, Tame Impala, the Strokes (who had never even been nominated), Harry Styles, Jay Electronica, and Freddie Gibbs all stand to take home their first trophy. The stakes are doubly high for BTS: Triumph for \u201cDynamite\u201d in the Best Pop Duo\/Group Performance category would make them the first K-pop group to win a Grammy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"controversies\" tabindex=\"-1\">\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Controversies\"><\/span>Controversies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>A blemish on the Record of the Year shortlist was the nomination of Lukasz \u201cDr. Luke\u201d Gottwald, who worked on Doja Cat\u2019s \u201cSay So\u201d under his Tyson Trax pseudonym. As fellow nominee Fiona Apple noted, the 2018 Grammys invited Kesha\u2014who has alleged sexual abuse by Gottwald\u2014to perform a song about surviving abuse at the ceremony. (The producer has denied Kesha\u2019s allegations and sued for defamation.) Apple spoke in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2020\/dec\/18\/fiona-apple-i-finally-believed-myself-it-felt-great\"}' href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2020\/dec\/18\/fiona-apple-i-finally-believed-myself-it-felt-great\"><em>Guardian<\/em><\/a> interview about her wish to smash any award she might win in protest, before \u201cinviting all the ladies up\u201d on-stage to share it. \u201cMy second thought,\u201d she added, \u201cwas I wonder if I can get all these ladies to boycott this shit because of Dr. Luke.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid--item body body__container article__body grid-layout__content\">\n<p>The controversy further muddied the moral waters of the Recording Academy, epitomized by its 2019 appointment\u2014and subsequent ousting\u2014of Deborah Dugan as its first woman president and CEO. Dugan was hired amid promises of a fresh start after the controversial tenure of Neil Portnow, but she wound up filing an explosive discrimination complaint against the Academy, following her sudden removal. As well as defamation allegations, her complaint described a \u201cboys\u2019 club\u201d mentality and failures to address systemic diversity issues.<\/p>\n<p>Those issues came to a head when three of the five nominees for Best Children\u2019s Music Album asked the Recording Academy to rescind their nominations, citing \u201ca process that has\u2014both this year and historically\u2014so overlooked women, performers of color, and most especially Black performers.\u201d The award will go ahead, contested by the two artists who declined to pull out, Joanie Leeds and Justin Roberts.<\/p>\n<div data-attr-viewport-monitor=\"inline-recirc\" class=\"inline-recirc-wrapper inline-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monitor-anchor\"><\/div>\n<p>If you are so inclined, you may spare some sympathy for Justin Bieber, who despaired that the widely panned <em>Changes<\/em> was nominated in Best Pop Vocal Album, rather than an R&amp;B category. \u201cI am very meticulous and intentional about my music,\u201d Bieber wrote on Instagram. \u201cWith that being said, I set out to make an R&amp;B album. <em>Changes<\/em> was and is an R&amp;B album. It is not being acknowledged as an R&amp;B album, which is very strange to me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the biggest controversy of all at the 2021 Grammys just might be\u2026<\/p>\n<div id=\"snubs\" tabindex=\"-1\">\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_was_snubbed\"><\/span>Who was snubbed?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hot on the heels of his Super Bowl halftime show\u2014and in the year of eligibility for smash single \u201cBlinding Lights\u201d\u2014the Weeknd looked like a shoo-in for the major categories. Instead, Abel Tesfaye and his <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/business\/chart-beat\/9345850\/the-weeknd-after-hours-billboard-200-debut-2020-biggest-week\"}' href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/business\/chart-beat\/9345850\/the-weeknd-after-hours-billboard-200-debut-2020-biggest-week\">chart-topping<\/a> album\u00a0<em>After Hours<\/em> picked up precisely zero nominations, prompting Tesfaye to tweet that the awards body was \u201ccorrupt.\u201d In response to the controversy, the chair and interim president\/CEO of the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason jr., said the Weeknd just didn\u2019t get the votes\u2014and denied reports that the Academy had presented Tesfaye with an ultimatum to play either the Super Bowl or the Grammy ceremony, both of which are broadcast on CBS.<\/p>\n<p>Grammys staple Bob Dylan was another notable absence from the list of nominees. On the back of his critically acclaimed album <em>Rough and Rowdy Ways<\/em>, as well as the remarkable and Billboard-charting \u201cMurder Most Foul,\u201d the 38-time nominee did not receive a single nod. Dylan\u2019s reps did not comment on whether his work was submitted. His last studio album, 2017\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trip<\/a>licate<\/em>, was nominated that year for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.<\/p>\n<p>Fans of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion can breathe easy, however: \u201cWAP\u201d was not submitted, according to the artists\u2019 teams. The plan, they said, is to submit the track next year alongside the campaign for a forthcoming Cardi album.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_notable_nominations\"><\/span>Other notable nominations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Look beyond the headline artists up for the so-called \u201cbig four\u201d Grammys and you\u2019ll find some notable collaborators. JAY-Z is nominated for Song of the Year alongside Beyonc\u00e9 as a co-writer on \u201cBLACK PARADE\u201d\u2014unbelievably, that would be 22-time winner JAY\u2019s first ever win in the big four.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Dessner is up for Album of the Year and Song of the Year as a co-writer and co-producer on Taylor Swift\u2019s <em>folklore<\/em> and \u201ccardigan\u201d; he\u2019ll be hoping to expand his collection after the National\u2019s Best Alternative Music Album win for <em>Sleep Well Beast<\/em>. Meanwhile, HAIM\u2019s Album of the Year nod could potentially bag a win for co-producers Rostam and Ariel Rechtshaid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid--item body body__container article__body grid-layout__content\">\n<p>Should Chloe x Halle win Best R&amp;B Song for \u201cDo It,\u201d they would nab co-writer Victoria Mon\u00e9t her first Grammy in the process. If Skip Marley and H.E.R. win in the same category, however, it would be a milestone for serial songwriter Bibi Bourelly, who is nominated for the very first time, despite her illustrious catalog of co-writes for Rihanna, Usher, Christina Aguilera, and others in recent years.<\/p>\n<div data-attr-viewport-monitor=\"inline-recirc\" class=\"inline-recirc-wrapper inline-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monitor-anchor\"><\/div>\n<p>Keep an eye on the Best Dance Recording category, too, where Disclosure, Amin\u00e9, and slowthai (\u201cMy High\u201d), Toro y Moi (Flume\u2019s \u201cThe Difference\u201d), Jayda G and Fred again.. (\u201cBoth of Us\u201d), and KAYTRANADA and Kali Uchis (\u201c10%\u201d) are all up for their first Grammy. Disclosure and KAYTRANADA are also up for Best Dance\/Electronic Album, where somebody is guaranteed to win their first Grammy; the other nominees are Arca, Baauer, and Madeon.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Fiona Apple is nominated three times, hoping to take home (or, perhaps, smash) her first trophy in 23 years: It was way back in 1998 that \u201cCriminal\u201d won Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Nas received his first nomination two years earlier, in 1996, and is still waiting to pick up a win; <em>King\u2019s Disease<\/em> is nominated for Best Rap Album.<\/p>\n<p>Last but not least, give some (over)dues to Emily Lazar, who\u2014in the Album of the Year category alone\u2014is up for three Grammys as a mastering engineer, with HAIM, Coldplay, and Jacob Collier.
