Prince Harry and Meghan Markle\u2019s bombshell racism claims <\/a>have more than just shaken the royal family \u2014 it is potentially threatening the future of the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex\u2019s tell-all with Oprah Winfrey aired in the UK on Commonwealth Day, as Queen Elizabeth II praised \u201cthe spirit of unity\u201d among the association of 54 countries.<\/p>\n

It also marked one year since the couple\u2019s last appearance as senior royals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But after the explosive TV special aired<\/a>, that unity was split by growing calls for member-nations to finally drop the queen as their head of state.<\/p>\n

In Australia, former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said it was finally time to sever constitutional ties to the British monarchy.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the end of the queen\u2019s reign, that is the time for us to say: OK, we\u2019ve passed that watershed,\u201d Turnbull told Australian Broadcasting Corp.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDo we really want to have whoever happ<\/a>ens to be the head of state, the king or queen of the UK, automatically our head of state?\u201d<\/p>\n

News<\/a> Americas, which owns media<\/a> outlets across the Caribbean, published an editorial <\/a>calling on Commonwealth nations to \u201cemancipate themselves from the mental slavery and the last shackle of colonialism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the Meghan\/Harry tea spilling has revealed anything, it is the obvious racism that exists at the top of the so-called Royalist ticket,\u201d the company wrote, noting that the local nations still in the Commonwealth are \u201cwhere the majority of the population \u2026 are either black or brown.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTime to emancipate yourselves from mental slavery once and for all,\u201d the editorial boldly stated of the Commonwealth, which is mostly made up of former British colonies.<\/p>\n

In Uganda, newspaper columnist Nicholas Sengoba said the Sussexes\u2019 interview \u201copens our eyes further\u201d and questioned whether the heads of Commonwealth countries should still be \u201cproud to eat dinner\u201d with members of the British royal family.<\/p>\n

Idayat Hassan, the head of the Centre for Democracy and Development in Nigeria \u2014 the Commonwealth\u2019s most populous black nation \u2014 told The Times of London<\/a> that Nigerians were \u201cdisappointed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are a proud nation and have always assumed the royal family were pro-African and we enjoyed the relationship,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe assumed we stood at the same level as them, but it seems as though they have in fact looked down on us,\u201d Hassan told the UK paper.<\/p>\n

Asanda Ngoasheng, a South African activist on race, told the paper that he hoped the interview \u201cmakes us wake up and ask, do we need royalty?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe royal family led the colonialism\/imperialism project. It should not be surprising to learn that they are racist,\u201d Ngoasheng told the UK Times.<\/p>\n

There were similar calls in Jamaica, a nation that has talked about becoming a republic for a number of years.<\/p>\n

\u201cOut of this \u2014 a black majority country having a monarchy as its head of state that is racist towards Meghan \u2014 comes the fact that we should honorably part with the monarchy in London,\u201d Bert Samuels, a member of the Reparation Council of Jamaica, told the outlet.<\/p>\n

\u201cHarry and Meghan exposed the existence of entrenched racism against black people in the royal family and the wider British establishment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Retired Jamaican professor Carolyn Cooper also said that the interview proved \u201cthat we should jump up and get rid of the queen as the head of state.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a disreputable institution. It\u2019s responsible for the enslavement of millions of us who came here to work on plantations. It\u2019s part of the whole legacy of colonialism and we need to get rid of it,\u201d Cooper said.<\/p>\n

Canadian opposition leader Jagmeet Singh said that \u201cthe systematic racism that we\u2019ve seen\u201d only confirms that the monarchy \u201cis in no way beneficial to Canadians in terms of their everyday life.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, The Great White North is refusing to officially debate leaving the Commonwealth \u2014 at least for now.<\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau noted that many institutions in Canada are built around colonialism and systematic racism, including Parliament.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe answer is not to suddenly toss out all the institutions and start over,\u201d Trudeau said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish all the members of the royal family all the best \u2026 If people want to later talk about constitutional change and shifting our system of government that\u2019s fine, and they can have those conversations, but right now I\u2019m not having those conversations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Queen on Tuesday said <\/a>that the couple\u2019s allegations to Oprah, \u201cparticularly that of race,\u201d were \u201cconcerning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately,\u201d the Queen said.<\/p>\n
