Read on for everything you need to know about the highly anticipated museum.<span id=\"more-661588\"><\/span><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->In today\u2019s presentation, Oscar winner <strong>Laura Dern<\/strong> narrated a virtual tour of the 300,000 square foot, two-building campus connected by glass bridges and located in the Miracle Mile district of Los Angeles. There will be a myriad of galleries and exhibitions on display when the museum opens for in-person attendance on <strong>September 30<\/strong>, <strong>2021<\/strong>, but surprisingly, it sounds like the museum is not interested in only presenting a squeaky-clean image to the world. Dern mentioned multiple times that various areas and installations will specifically address \u201cless proud moments in the histories of the Academy and the film industry.\u201d There\u2019s a gallery called Identity which explores \u201cexamples of how hair and makeup have been used to perpetuate racial stereotypes in the movies,\u201d another area which delves into \u201csome of animation\u2019s most troubling histories, including depictions of harmful racial stereotypes and the objectification of female characters,\u201d and, in a two-gallery experience devoted to the Academy Awards, the museum \u201cwill not shy away from problematic histories, including OscarsSoWhite, the lack of female representation, and <strong>Hattie McDaniel<\/strong>\u2018s mistreatment at the Oscars ceremony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-661623 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Academy-Museum-details-700x300.jpg\" alt=\"Academy Museum of motion pictures details\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Academy-Museum-details.jpg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Academy-Museum-details-360x154.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The museum\u2019s core exhibition is called Stories of Cinema and will be a three-floor exhibition \u201cthat explores the celebratory, complex, diverse, and international stories of the people that make motion pictures and the films they create.\u201d This will be a dynamic, ever-changing exhibition, but when the museum opens, it will begin with an introductory corridor with floor-to-ceiling projections teasing the films that will be highlighted in the rooms beyond. Then guests will see six vignettes devoted to specific movies and movie artists: <em>Citizen Kane<\/em> (the actual Rosebud sled will be on display), <em>Real Women Have Curves<\/em>, editor <strong>Thelma Schoonmaker<\/strong>, <strong>Bruce Lee<\/strong>, cinematographer <strong>Emmanuel \u201cChivo\u201d Lubezki<\/strong>, and pioneering Black filmmaker <strong>Oscar Micheaux<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a series of galleries called The Art of Moviemaking which \u201ckick off with director\u2019s inspiration, a space co-curated with the directors themselves.\u201d First up will be a collaboration with <strong>Spike Lee<\/strong>, who seems to be transporting a significant portion of his collection from Brooklyn to Los Angeles for this experience. \u201cMy collection is a sneak peek into my loves, my influences, and it\u2019s for the whole world to see,\u201d he said in a video message.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a gallery devoted to the creation of a single film, focusing on the mechanics and creation of story and taking \u201ca deep dive into the collaborative process of moviemaking.\u201d The opening film will be <em>The Wizard of Oz<\/em>, and visitors will learn \u201cabout the film\u2019s many contributors, from executives to special effects artists, cinematographers, to costume designers, and more.\u201d<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 -->There will also be a gallery devoted to casting and performance that will feature screen tests, audition tapes, and casting cards from people like <strong>Henry Thomas<\/strong>, <strong>Taraji P. Henson<\/strong>, <strong>Chiwetel Ejiofor<\/strong>, <strong>Hilary Swank<\/strong>, and more. A sound-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a>d gallery will showcase a short film made at Skywalker Sound that \u201cbreaks down key components and layers of sound design in <em>Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/em>.\u201d And speaking of sound, Oscar-winning sound designer\u00a0<strong>Ben Burtt<\/strong> has created an original cylindrical installation devoted to the evolution of space in the movies that\u2019s described as \u201ca dynamic 320 degree experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Composers will be represented as well, with a sound chamber devoted to the work of a single composer at a time. Starting things off will be <strong>Hildur Gu\u00f0nad\u00f3ttir<\/strong>, who won an Oscar for her score for <em>Joker<\/em>. You\u2019ll be able to hear clips from her scores, as well as new music created specifically for this space.<\/p>\n<p>On the third floor, the Stories of Cinema exhibition starts with an installation space that will be co-curated with a revolving roster of international film artists. <strong>Pedro Almodovar<\/strong> is responsible for the opening installation, which \u201cfeatures twelve screens highlighting themes frequently found in his films: musicals, religion, melodrama, and mothers, just to name a few.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s an effects gallery which will focus on the influence of <strong>Ray Harryhousen<\/strong> and <strong>Willis O\u2019Brien<\/strong>, the significance of movies like <em>Jurassic Park<\/em> and <em>Terminator 2<\/em>, and more, as well as an \u201cEncounters\u201d gallery populated with original set pieces, costumes, and characters from sci-fi, fantasy, and horror films.<\/p>\n<p>And as we\u2019ve previously covered, the Academy Museum will be the home of the first North American retrospective on <strong>Hayao Miyazaki<\/strong>. On <strong>April 22<\/strong>, the Academy Museum\u2019s website will host Breaking the Oscars Ceiling, \u201ca conversation hosted by Academy Museum trustee <strong>Diane von Furstenberg<\/strong> and moderated by the Academy Museum\u2019s <strong>Jacqueline Stewart<\/strong>, who will be speaking with women who achieved historic Oscars milestones. Guests include actor <strong>Sophia Loren<\/strong>, actor and co<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>n <strong>Whoopi Goldberg<\/strong>, actor <strong>Marlee Matlin<\/strong>, and singer-songwriter <strong>Buffy Sainte-Marie<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additional virtual programs will include the following (although no specific dates or times have been rolled out yet):<\/p>\n<p><b>Film Screenings and Conversations with the Artists<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<b><i>Pariah\u00a0<\/i><\/b>(2011), the cast and crew of this groundbreaking fiction debut of writer\/director Dee Rees reunite to discuss the conception, production, and impact of this coming-of-age story.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<i><b>Y tu mam\u00e1 tambi\u00e9n<\/b>\u00a0<\/i>(2001), a celebration of the creative partnership between three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel \u201cChivo\u201d Lubezki and four-time Oscar-winning writer-director Alfonso Cuaron (this event will be in Spanish with English subtitles).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>In Conversation Series<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Spike Lee<\/b>, a virtual conversation with the trailblazing writer-director, exploring how Lee\u2019s vast personal collection represents his many cinematic muses in the museum\u2019s Director\u2019s Inspiration gallery.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hildur Gu\u00f0nad\u00f3ttir<\/strong>, a virtual conversation between the Oscar-winning musician and composer (Joker, 2019) and Academy Museum Exhibitions Curator Jenny He, discussing Gu\u00f0nad\u00f3ttir\u2019s work and her approach to designing the museum\u2019s Composer\u2019s Inspiration gallery.<\/li>\n<li><b>Activism and Film<\/b>, an in-depth conversation on the intersections between filmmaking and social change featuring drop-in guests and previewing the Academy Museum\u2019s Impact\/Reflection gallery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Workshops and Education Programs<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>How to Use Film as a Teaching Tool to Have Difficult Conversations<\/b>, a series of workshops for educators and caregivers.<\/li>\n<li><b>The Work of Black VFX Artists<\/b>\u00a0, celebrating the accomplishments of six visual effects professionals in a candid discussion about perseverance and the shared experiences of Black film artists in the industry. Offering unprecedented access into their creative process via break-out sessions with visual effects professionals Lyndon Barrois, Lauren Ellis, Audrea Topps-Harjo, Greg Anderson, Andrew Roberts, and Corey Turner.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>Hayao Miyazaki\u00a0<\/i>Family Day<\/b>, introducing families to the world of Hayao Miyazaki\u2019s films through a day of events including art-making workshops and live performances. Academy Museum family day programs are made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The virtual screenings themselves will only be available in the United States at this time, but the subsequent conversations will be available to access from anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p>When the museum finally opens its doors, guests will be able to engage with film series that celebrate a wide selection of cinematic perspectives, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Branch Selects<\/b>, selected by each of the Academy\u2019s 17 branches that represent meaningful breakthroughs in the evolution of their craft.<\/li>\n<li><b>Exhibition-inspired series<\/b>\u00a0expanding on the themes, films, and filmmakers in the museum\u2019s galleries. For the museum\u2019s inaugural temporary exhibition, Hayao Miyazaki, the museum will present all of Miyazaki\u2019s features in both Japanese with English subtitles and with English dubbing, as well as additional series exploring the worlds, ideas and stories created by this master filmmaker.<\/li>\n<li><b>Oscar Sundays<\/b>, screenings of Oscar-nominated and -winning films, as well as a behind the scenes look inside the Academy and the Academy Awards.<\/li>\n<li><b>Filmmakers\u2019 Inspiration<\/b>, expanding upon the gallery spaces curated by film artists Pedro Almod\u00f3var, Hildur Gu\u00f0nad\u00f3ttir, and Spike Lee with films they select highlighting their own works and films that have influenced them.<\/li>\n<li><b>Preservation Spotlights<\/b>, showcasing recently preserved films from archives around the world<\/li>\n<li><b>Retrospectives\u00a0<\/b>offering expansive surveys of a filmmaker\u2019s body of work.
