Culture critic: Instagram\u2019s Empty Religions

The \u201cnones\u201d \u2014 the 22 percent of millennials without a specific religion \u2014 have \u201cfound a different kind of clergy,\u201d Leigh Stein reports at The New York Times<\/a>: Instagram \u201cpersonal-growth influencers.\u201d Millennials\u2019 \u201cnew belief system is a blend of left-wing political orthodoxy, intersectional feminism, self-optimization, therapy, wellness, astrology and Dolly Parton.\u201d Take memoirist Glennon Doyle, who offers an \u201caccessible combination of self-care, activism and tongue-in-cheek Christianity.\u201d Women like Doyle \u00adoffer nones \u201cpermission, validation and community on demand,\u201d while \u201cit\u2019s nearly impossible to share communion in person. We don\u2019t even have to put down our phones.\u201d Instead of tackling life\u2019s fundamental questions, \u201cthe whole economy of Instagram is based on\u201d women \u201cthinking about our selves, posting about our selves, working on our selves.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leftist: The Crumbling \u2018Insurrection\u2019 Narrative

At his Substack blog, Glenn Greenwald flags<\/a> the awkward fact that the nation has had two sets of warnings in six weeks \u201cabout imminent, grave threats to public safety posed by the same type of right-wing extremists who rioted at the Capitol\u201d on Jan. 6. And \u201cboth times, these warnings ushered in severe security measures only to prove utterly baseless.\u201d Despite hysteria on CNN and NPR about \u201cpotential violence in all 50 state capitals\u201d on Inauguration Day, nothing happ<\/a>ened, except minor lefty violence in Portland and Seattle. March 4, ballyhooed as a big deal for QAnon crazies, also proved a non-event. The extremist threat is \u201cbeing deliberately inflated and exaggerated, and fears stoked and exploited, both for political gain and to justify the placement of more and more powers in the hands of the state.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: Woke Public-Health Hypocrites
<\/strong>
When public-health groups declared racism a barrier to \u201chealth equity,\u201d major US cities last summer \u201craced to align themselves,\u201d observes Commentary\u2019s Noah Rothman<\/a> \u2014 yet their actions led to worse outcomes. After George Floyd\u2019s killing, health officials declared COVID-mitigation strategies an obstacle to racial rapprochement. A \u201cpublic-relations campaign\u201d was deployed not \u201cto augment existing public-health guidelines, but to circumvent them.\u201d Blue-state elected officials reversed \u201ctheir inviolable commitment to preventing dangerous gatherings\u201d \u2014 and \u201c2020\u2019s long, hot summer began\u201d: At least six people were killed in the violence; looting and vandalism sparked as much as $2 billion in insurance payouts.<\/p>\n

Royal watch: Throne of Victimhood
<\/strong>
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex\u2019s two-hour television sit-down was \u201ca grotesque spectacle \u2014 emotionally manipulative, self-obsessed and a clear attempt by Harry and Meghan to position themselves as the king and queen of victim politics,\u201d declares Spiked Online\u2019s Brendan O\u2019Neill<\/a>. \u201cIn a country where\u201d millions lost their jobs to lockdowns, \u201cthis pair, who get paid millions for making naff podcasts, moaned to billionaire\u201d Oprah Winfrey \u201cabout how difficult their lives have been\u201d from \u201cthe unimaginably luxurious surrounds of a Californian mansion.\u201d And what hypocrisy: \u201cNobody invades Meghan Markle\u2019s privacy as much as Meghan Markle does\u201d by \u201cconstantly revealing all.\u201d The couple\u2019s \u201cpunishment of the disobedient media<\/a>\u201d and insistence on telling us \u201chow to live, how to travel<\/a>, how many kids to have\u201d show they are \u201cfar more old-world monarchical\u201d than the queen, with her \u201cideals of duty, self-sacrifice, stoicism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: New Meaning to Loony Left
<\/strong>
Last week, we saw \u201csix children\u2019s books by Dr. Seuss shoved into the memory hole because, according to the frightened bureaucrats at Dr. Seuss Enterprises, \u2018they portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,\u2019\u200a\u201d scoffs Roger Kimball at The Epoch Times<\/a>. We also witnessed \u201cCharles Blow, a columnist for The New York Times, inveighing strenuously against the \u2018Looney Tunes\u2019 character Pep\u00e9 Le Pew because, in the febrile imagination of Mr. Blow, the cartoon skunk \u2018normalized rape culture.\u2019\u200a\u201d Add these episodes to the left\u2019s push to all but proscribe state-level voting-integrity laws and to bar white men from COVID-relief benefits, and the result is political \u201c\u200a\u2018Loony Tunes,\u2019 indeed.\u201d <\/p>\n
