“#Black Pumas vie for Grammys 2021 gold with ‘Colors’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Last year \u2014 just weeks before the pandemic put the world on pause \u2014 retro-soul sensations Black Pumas were rubbing shoulders with Cardi B, Billie Eilish and Tyler, the Creator<\/a> at the Grammys.<\/p>\n

Now, singer-guitarist Eric Burton and guitarist-producer Adrian Quesada have friends in even higher places \u2014 namely, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris \u2014 after performing for their inauguration in January.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was pretty crazy,\u201d said Quesada, 44, of app<\/a>earing on the star-studded \u201cCelebrating America\u201d special<\/a> that aired on inauguration night. \u201cIt was really short notice, but they just reached out and said that they wanted us to play. We didn\u2019t quite grasp the magnitude of what we were doing when we taped it. We didn\u2019t grasp how big the event was or how big the day, the moment, was until we saw it, and it was just such a good feeling of optimism and unity and people coming together. It\u2019s been a long time coming that we needed something like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Austin, Texas-based duo played their all-embracing anthem \u201cColors,\u201d which is nominated for Record of the Year at the 2021 Grammys on Sunday, March 14. They are also up for another top award, Album of the Year, for the deluxe edition of their 2019 self-titled debut, as well as Best American Roots Performance (\u201cColors\u201d).<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t ever expect to be nominated for something as big as this,\u201d said Burton, 31. \u201cWe just play music, we make it because we really love it, and we\u2019re so glad that people are connecting with it \u2026 I imagine that the feeling that we\u2019re feeling right now is somewhat like winning the lottery.\u201d<\/p>\n

These cats certainly felt like they scored winning tickets as Best New Artist nominees at last year\u2019s Grammys. \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe how far into the building we were walking with our tickets, where I\u2019m like, \u2018Is this right?\u2019 \u201d said Quesada \u201cWe were in the fourth row! I just kept thinking some security was gonna grab us and be like, \u2018No, actually, you guys are up there in the nosebleeds.\u2019 It was wild, man.\u201d<\/p>\n

Returning to Southern California for the awards, Burton \u2014 who used to busk at the Santa Monica Pier \u2014 had a full-circle moment. \u201cIt was a bizarre thing to experience Los Angeles again from the perspective of being an elite performer as part of an elite band,\u201d he said. \u201cIt felt like rediscovering Los Angeles for me from a completely new perspective. That was really cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not so cool, though, that Burton has any regrets about moving to Austin on his birthday, Oct. 7, in 2015. \u201cTo then, a year and a half later, meet Adrian Quesada, make an album, and a year later we\u2019re nominated for a Grammy \u2026 it\u2019s hard for me to believe that this kind of a story would happen anywhere else,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Longtime Austin resident Quesada \u2014 who was previously a member of the Grammy-winning Latin funk band Grupo Fantasma<\/a> \u2014 found the \u201cyin\u201d to his \u201cyang\u201d when Black Pumas formed in 2017 and went on to break out of the city\u2019s vibrant live music scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we balance each other out,\u201d said Quesada, \u201cbecause if I was in a band with another person like me, I\u2019d be fighting with them all the time. If it was another me, I\u2019d hate that guy!\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
