Denmark became at least the sixth European country to scale back the use of AstraZeneca\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine after some people who received it developed blood clots.<\/p>\n

Health officials say they\u2019re investigating the cases, but there\u2019s no evidence so far that the British drugmaker\u2019s jab caused the clots.<\/p>\n

The Danish Health and Medicines Authority halted<\/a> the rollout of AstraZeneca\u2019s jab for at least two weeks on Thursday following \u201csevere cases\u201d of blood clots in vaccinated people, one of which was related to a death.<\/p>\n

Danish officials say they need to take time to probe those incidents even though there\u2019s good evidence the AstraZeneca vaccine is safe and effective. <\/p>\n

Magnus Heunicke, Denmark\u2019s health minister, said it is not yet clear<\/a> whether there\u2019s a link between the shot and the blood clots. Danish officials are waiting for European Union authorities to investigate the potential link.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now we need all the vaccines we can get. Therefore, putting one of the vaccines on pause is not an easy decision,\u201d S\u00f8ren Brostr\u00f8m, director of Denmark\u2019s National Board of Health, said in a statement. \u201cBut precisely because we vaccinate so many, we also need to respond with timely care when there is knowledge of possible serious side effects.\u201d<\/p>\n

Denmark\u2019s decision came after five EU nations \u2014\u00a0Austria, Estonia, Lithuania, Luxembourg and Latvia \u2014 stopped using doses from a single batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine this week over blood clot concerns.<\/p>\n

Three people in Austria have developed blood clots after getting the jab, including one who died 10 days after vaccination, according to the European Medicines Agency<\/a>, the EU\u2019s drug regulator.<\/p>\n

A fourth patient developed a pulmonary embolism, a condition in which a blockage forms in the lungs\u2019 arteries, officials said.<\/p>\n

The European Medicines Agency said there was \u201ccurrently no indication\u201d that AstraZeneca\u2019s vaccine caused those conditions, which are not listed as side effects for the shot.<\/p>\n

EU officials are investigating the quality of the affected batch \u2014 which includes about 1 million doses delivered to 17 nations \u2014 even though \u201ca quality defect is considered unlikely at this stage,\u201d the agency said.<\/p>\n

In all, 22 cases of blood clots had been reported as of Tuesday among the 3 million people who had received AstraZeneca\u2019s vaccine in the 29-nation European Economic Area, officials said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe information available so far indicates that the number of thromboembolic events in vaccinated people is no higher than that seen in the general<\/a> population,\u201d the European Medicines Agency said in a Wednesday statement.<\/p>\n

An AstraZeneca spokesperson noted that the vaccine\u2019s safety has been \u201cextensively studied\u201d in clinical trials and peer-reviewed data have confirmed the shot is \u201cgenerally well tolerated.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPatient safety is the highest priority for AstraZeneca,\u201d the company spokesperson said in a statement. \u201cRegulators have clear and stringent efficacy and safety standards for the app<\/a>roval of any new medicine, and that includes COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
