These can then be reused in future battery packs, reducing waste.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/electriccarsreport.com\/2021\/03\/volkswagen-shows-off-a-new-way-to-recycle-and-reuse-ev-batteries\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ElectricCarsReport+%28Electric+Cars+News%2C+Reports+about+Electric+Cars%29\">Electric Cars Report<\/a>, conventional recycling methods can only recover about 60% of a batteries materials. So VW\u2019s new process marks a notable step forward.<\/p>\n<p>At present, VW\u2019s Salzgitter plant can recycle 3,600 battery packs each year. That\u2019s a good start, but <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smart-energy.com\/industry-sectors\/electric-vehicles\/end-of-life-electric-vehicle-batteries-recycling-or-second-life\/\">studies predict<\/a> that by 2040 there will be more than 7 million tonnes of EV batteries that need recycling. Bear in mind, the average EV battery weighs about 500 kgs.<\/p>\n<p>With over 588,000 EVs registered for use on Germany\u2019s roads, there\u2019s going to be significant battery recycling demand in over the next two decades. More than VW\u2019s plant can handle on its own, unless it scales up\u2026 and fast.<\/p>\n<p><span>If the country \u2014 and indeed, the world \u2014 is going to keep\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__highlight\">EV\u00a0power packs from landfill, it needs to expand its\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__highlight\">EV\u00a0battery recycling rapidly over the next decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><i><span>Do EVs excite your electrons?
