NASA\u2019s\u00a0Chandra Observatory said Wednesday that it was observing NGC 3081.<\/p>\n

NGC\u00a03081 is a\u00a0barred\u00a0spiral galaxy\u00a0located about 86 million light-years from the\u00a0Earth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe galaxy\u2019s center is surrounded by a bright loop known as a resonance ring,\u201d the agency wrote in a tweet. \u201cThe ring is filled with dazzling clusters of\u00a0stars\u00a0and bursts of new star formation.\u201d<\/p>\n

As seen in a previous image from the\u00a0NASA\/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, the galaxy is located in the\u00a0constellation of Hydra.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is\u00a0known as a type II Seyfert galaxy, with an active galactic nucleus,\u00a0according to NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Active\u00a0galactic nuclei\u00a0are galaxies in which the cores emit vast amounts of energy\u00a0and\u00a0shoot vast amounts of energy out into space,\u00a0according to the Herschel Space Observatory<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The resonance ring Chandra describes is believed to be\u00a0framing a supermassive black hole within NGC 3081.<\/p>\n

These rings form in certain locations called resonances where\u00a0gravitational effects cause gas to accumulate in certain positions.<\/p>\n

The rings can be caused by interactions with nearby objects or a \u201cbar\u201d within the galaxy, which are very effective at gathering gas\u00a0into these regions \u2014 this all leads to star formation.<\/p>\n

Though isolated, scientists think there could be as many as\u00a0100 billion\u00a0galaxies<\/a>\u00a0in the universe.\n <\/div>\n
