A blockchain-based digital artwork has just sold at Christie\u2019s for a history-making $69 million<\/a>, putting its creator \u201camong the top three most valuable living artists<\/a>,\u201d according to the auction house.<\/p>\n

Digital artist Mike Winkelmann, a k a Beeple, made international headlines earlier this month when it was announced that his work, \u201cEverydays: The First 5000 Days,\u201d would be showing at the London-based auction house on Thursday. <\/p>\n

The pixel-esque collage consists of rows on rows of thumbnail-sized illustrations, many of which are heavily inspired by sci-fi culture, and represent 5,000 days of Winkelmann\u2019s tireless practice in the computer arts. <\/p>\n

Beeple\u2019s work had previously made waves after Miami-based art collector Pablo Rodriguez-Fraile\u00a0turned out $6.6 million for the sale of a 10-second digital animation, titled \u201cCrossroad,\u201d which he purchased for a somewhat cringe-worthy\u00a0$66,666.66.<\/p>\n

But it wasn\u2019t so much an investment in Winkelmann\u2019s art as it was his medium: NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, which grant access to information stored on highly secure blockchains. Only the keeper of the NFT can access Beeple\u2019s original file.<\/p>\n

Granted, anyone can see the video online now, but only one person has proof of the original file. <\/p>\n

The South Carolina-based artist was hailed by Christie\u2019s<\/a> as \u201cvisionary\u201d and \u201cirreverent,\u201d while others have called much of it \u201ccrude<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHe showed us this collage, and that was my eureka moment when I knew this was going to be extremely important,\u201d said Noah Davis, a specialist in post-war and contemporary art at Christie\u2019s, according to the Verge<\/a>. \u201cIt was just so monumental and so indicative of what NFTs can do.\u201d<\/p>\n

NFT-based art is already on a rapid pace to become some of the most valuable produced today. Last month, the multi-talented artist Grimes also sold $6 million worth of digital art in the form of NFTs, the Verge reported<\/a> on March 1.<\/p>\n

In a statement following Thursday\u2019s record-breaking sale, Winkelmann acknowledged that the moment marked \u201cthe next chapter of art history.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow there is a way to collect digital art,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
