Netflix<\/strong> password sharing may become a thing of the past, if the latest feature the streaming giant is testing proves to be a success. A new feature, which is getting a limited rollout at this time, could signal the start of an effort to crack down on password sharing by the streamer, which lately has begun to shift its formerly passive stance on password policing.<\/p>\n

According to reports from\u00a0GammaWire<\/a>\u00a0and Streamable<\/a>, Netflix is testing a new feature that could stop viewers from using somebody else\u2019s account.
\nUpon\u00a0login, some Netflix viewers are seeing the following message: \u201cIf you don\u2019t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.\u201d To continue watching content, they have to first verify the account they\u2019re using with a code sent to the email address or phone of the user.\u00a0If they aren\u2019t able to verify the account or opt to \u201cverify later,\u201d\u00a0they are prompted to create their own account with a 30-day free trial.<\/p>\n

Netflix confirmed the new feature, which is still in limited rollout.\u00a0\u201cThis test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so,\u201d a Netflix spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

Netflix does not clarify how they determine who is in the same household, or if a shared IP address counts as being in the same household.\u00a0According to Streamable, the test is only currently showing up on connected TV devices, not on laptops or phones. Per The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, the rollout of the test version of this feature varies from country to country and that they\u2019re intended \u201cto help protect subscribers from security concerns that can arise from unauthorized use of their account.\u201d<\/p>\n

Netflix states in its terms and conditions that accounts are \u201cfor your personal and non-commercial use only and may not be shared with individuals beyond your household,\u201d but it\u2019s held a somewhat lackadaisical attitude towards password sharing in the past, with Netflix\u00a0CEO\u00a0Reed Hastings declaring<\/a>\u00a0in 2016,\u00a0\u201cPassword sharing is something you have to learn to live with because there\u2019s so much legitimate password sharing \u2013 like you sharing with your spouse, with your kids \u2026. so there\u2019s no bright line, and we\u2019re doing fine as is.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, back in 2019,\u00a0Netflix Chief Product Officer Greg Peters said the company was looking to limit password sharing among its customers,\u00a0Newsweek<\/a>\u00a0reported. \u201cWe continue to monitor it, so we\u2019re looking at the situation,\u201d he said at the time, but admitted Netflix had \u201cno big plans to announce\u2026in terms of doing something differently there.\u201d
