The documentation notes the consensus upgrade from PoS to PoW will be the core change enacted.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">6. This is usually called the &#8220;merge&#8221; &#8211; when the existing Ethereum network will swap over to using the Beacon chain, instead of Proof of Work. <\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s growing consensus that the merge ought to be prioritized as the next step, see e.g. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JlgD1S3GrY\">https:\/\/t.co\/JlgD1S3GrY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Josh Stark (@0xstark) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/0xstark\/status\/1370063655790780419?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 11, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>The publication of specs comes as tensions between Ethereum miners and developers ramp up. Miners stand to lose significant revenue with the transition to proof-of-stake, while Ethereum\u2019s developers are keen to ameliorate the persistently high fees and congestion on Ethereum.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Cointelegraph reported that Ethereum\u2019s core developers had scheduled to implement Ethereum Improvement Proposal-1559 in July, which will replace Ethereuem\u2019s existing fee market with a flat price and burn mechanism. <\/p>\n<p>While the proposal is expected to discipline Ethereum\u2019s surging fees, 1559 could reduce miner revenue by as much as 50%. As such, some miners responded to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> by planning a \u201cshow of force,\u201d advocating for Ethereum miners to redirect their hash power to the 1559-opposed mining pool Ethermine for 51 hours on April 1.<\/p>\n<p>However, the core developers appear to have been prepared for the miner-backlash. Last month, Ethereum co-creator, Vitalik Buterin said on Chinese <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WuBlockchain\/status\/1364055967625740293\">reposted by <\/a>Wu Blockchain) that if miners threaten a 51% attack, \u201cwe will all move to PoS as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Developers also paired EIP-1559 with a delay to the difficulty bomb in July\u2019s London upgrade in order to make a hard fork less likely. And as Redditor Always_Question pointed out in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/old.reddit.com\/r\/ethereum\/comments\/lyj8on\/why_the_merge_should_be_prioritized_over_data\/\">Reddit post <\/a>arguing for the Merge to be prioritized: &#8220;Having the Merge at the ready provides a fallback for the community should a cartel of miners collude to neutralize the positive effects of EIP 1559.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Buterin revealed that Eth2\u2019s developers have been prioritizing the chain merge over implementing sharding, with his comments on Chinese social media suggesting the focus on merging may be motivated by a desire to minimize the potential impacts of resistance from miners. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ethereum miner rebellion will likely force <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ethereum?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ethereum<\/a> 2.0 to happen even sooner than expected.
