“#Twee romance with a clever twist<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Is there anything more annoying than a cutesy new couple? The coo-ing, the nicknames, the tunnel vision, the dumb smiles. Insufferable!\u00a0<\/p>\n

A movie about one such cloying pair, \u201cLong Weekend,\u201d is nearly derailed by lovey-dovey irksomeness, but it\u2019s rescued by a clever twist.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Los Angeles lovebirds, Bart (Finn Wittrock) and Vienna (Zo\u00eb Chao), meet at a movie theater after a showing of the old film \u201cBeing There.\u201d He downed too much whiskey \u2014 a good half a handle, sheesh \u2014 and dozed off.<\/p>\n

She wakes him up, introduces herself, and soon they\u2019re off to a cocktail bar. Exactly what Bart needs.<\/p>\n

Over drinks, we learn that writer-director Stephen Basilone has little flair for dialogue.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you, like, one of those\u2026 what do you call \u2018em? Manic pixie dream girls?,\u201d says Bart. This is a question that nobody would ever really ask.<\/p>\n

Vienna then replies with another: \u201cAm I here to save you? Is that it?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Adding to nausea, the film they saw, \u201cBeing There,\u201d is about an average man named Chauncey Gardiner who is repeatedly in the right place at the right time. A tad on-the-nose, that.<\/p>\n

Then, after knowing each other for only a day or two, Bart and Vienna fall madly in love and incessantly call each other \u201cbuddy.\u201d\u00a0I winced every single time.<\/p>\n

It gets better. Vienna is mysterious. She casually lugs around tens of thousands of dollars in cash and doesn\u2019t own a cellphone. She can\u2019t say specifically where she\u2019s from or offer any details about her family.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The movie improves immeasurably when Vienna finally reveals her true identity, and the info is not at all what you expect it to be. <\/p>\n

But the dropped bomb only brings on more questions from us \u2014 as well as a hefty helping of doubt. It\u2019s very easy to confuse a crazy Californian for a charming one, after all. Basilone\u2019s movie becomes an intriguing puzzle that frequently bugs you, but you\u2019re nonetheless determined to make it to the end.<\/p>\n

As \u201cLong Weekend\u201d goes on, we learn about Bart\u2019s struggles with mental health and a difficult past relationship. He\u2019s forced to live with his friend Doug (Damon Wayans Jr.) and his family. Wittrock exudes a classic American pain that he showed us in \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d and \u201cThe Glass Menagerie\u201d on Broadway, and that depth makes the bad flirting and date nights go down easier.<\/p>\n

Chao, on the other hand, acts like a weird wheatgrass-juice guzzling hippie. While there is a good reason for why she seems a bit off, the character is nonetheless difficult to like. That\u2019s partly because it\u2019s a performance that so desperately craves being liked.<\/p>\n

Basilone\u2019s ending is deeply satisfying, though, and comes together in a sharply plotted, moving way.<\/p>\n

Now if only they didn\u2019t say \u201cbuddy\u201d so damn much. Blech.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
