{"id":200305,"date":"2021-03-12T06:00:18","date_gmt":"2021-03-12T03:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/scaffolding-covers-high-line-after-chunk-of-standard-hotel-falls\/"},"modified":"2021-03-12T06:00:18","modified_gmt":"2021-03-12T03:00:18","slug":"scaffolding-covers-high-line-after-chunk-of-standard-hotel-falls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/scaffolding-covers-high-line-after-chunk-of-standard-hotel-falls\/","title":{"rendered":"#Scaffolding covers High Line after chunk of Standard Hotel falls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Scaffolding covers High Line after chunk of Standard Hotel falls<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Strolling up the High Line won\u2019t be the same this spring \u2014 and pedestrians can thank a big, scary chunk of paneling that \u00adrecently fell off the Standard Hotel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A key stretch of the lavishly landscaped, tourist-friendly walkway that runs through Manhattan\u2019s Meatpacking District near the Hudson River has been quietly shuttered for a month now \u2014 and when it reopens next week it will look like a construction zone, The Post has learned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because The Standard hotel is belatedly putting up a 450-foot stretch of scaffolding over the High Line to protect pedestrians from falling debris after an 8-foot hunk of cement-and-fiberglass paneling fell off the swanky hotel\u2019s fa\u00e7ade on Jan. 2.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear when the shed will come down, but insiders aren\u2019t holding their breath.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s partly because the Standard Hotel <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to have been dragging its feet ever since its award-winning tower \u2014 built in 2009 by hotelier Andr\u00e9 Balazs and designed by Ennead Architects \u2014 shed the sheet of paneling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, it wasn\u2019t until four days after the panel dropped onto a neighboring roof that the city learned of the problem \u2014 not from the hotel, but from a call to 311 from a concerned tipster, city records show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Department of Buildings inspectors rushed to the scene to find a gaping hole in the 18-story luxury hotel, which straddles the High Line \u2014 a hot spot for hard-partying tourists prior to the pandemic. DOB slapped the hotel with a $2,500 violation on Feb. 10 and ordered it to hire engineers to conduct a stability assessment of the fa\u00e7ade. The hotel has complied.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Experts say the deterioration of the hotel \u2014 owned by Hong Kong-based Gaw Capital \u2014 is surprising, especially for a high-profile building constructed just 12 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing should be falling off a building,\u201d said C. Jaye Berger, an attorney who specializes in construction issues. \u201cI thought people learned their lesson after the architect was killed,\u201d she added, referring to Erica Tishman, who died in 2019 when she struck by falling debris from a Seventh Avenue tower.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, The Standard should have moved more quickly to put up the sidewalk sheds after the fallen panel was discovered, said \u00adStephen Varone, architect and president of RAND Engineering &amp; Architecture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNormally, you can put the shed up first and get the permits afterwards,\u201d Varone said. \u201cThe important point here is that public safety overrules the usual paperwork protocols.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, on Feb. 20, six weeks after the panel fell, the hotel was fined another $10,000 for its failure to \u201cimplement any pedestrian-protection measures to protect the public\u201d from the deteriorating fa\u00e7ade, records show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Standard on Monday finally filed \u00adpaperwork to erect scaffolding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"The fascade of the Standard Hotel fell off and people in the park are apparently worried about its further destruction\" class=\"wp-image-17538851 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/03102021TheStandard7.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/03102021TheStandard7.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/03102021TheStandard7.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/03102021TheStandard7.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/03102021TheStandard7.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Department of Buildings inspectors rushed to the scene to find a gaping hole in the 18-story luxury hotel.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Steven Hirsch<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a result, the southernmost section of the High Line between Gansevoort Street and West 14th Street, which has been closed off since Feb. 13, is slated to reopen Sunday, according to a source briefed on the situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, when it reopens, a maze of scaffolding will darken a crucial leg of the High Line that runs by the Standard Hotel\u2019s tower at 484 Washington St., which typically offers views not only of the river but the Whitney Museum.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to affecting the High Line, the crumbling facade has become a nuisance to \u00adNovac Noury, the longtime owner of a vacant plot of land on Little West 12th Street that\u2019s \u00adlocated just south of the hotel\u2019s danger zone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He claims he wasn\u2019t informed of the hazard until Feb. 27, when he got a letter from the hotel advising him to stay away from his own land. Calls to owner Gaw Capital\u2019s Los Angeles offices also weren\u2019t answered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time The Standard has gotten dinged for falling construction debris. It received a violation in June 2010 when one of its floor-to-ceiling windows \u2014 which famously have been used by exhibitionist guests to stage impromptu peep shows \u2014 \u201cfell to the public below\u201d from the 17th floor, according to public records. The hotel paid a $1,000 fine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After Tishman\u2019s 2019 death from falling building debris, The Post found that 5,300 buildings had been cited for faulty \u00adfacades that were never fixed, with many having never erected protective sheds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Buildings quickly issued 220 violations to other properties and later hired nearly a dozen more inspectors.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
