Netflix\u00a0is looking to crack down on password sharing with a new test.<\/p>\n

First discovered by GammaWire<\/a>, some users have encountered an inquiry when they log on asking for verification that they are the owner of the\u00a0Netflix account. A warning message reads: \u201cIf you don\u2019t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Netflix confirmed the test to FOX Business, noting it is \u201cdesigned to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is also designed to ensure revenue is not lost as the streaming space has grown increasingly competitive.\u00a0According to\u00a0an analysis by research firm Parks Associates, password piracy and sharing cost streaming providers $9.1 billion in 2019 alone. The firm estimates that figure will rise to $12.5 billion by 2024.<\/p>\n

Netflix will give users\u00a0the option to verify their account through a code sent by text message or email.\u00a0In addition, they will be given the option to \u201cverify later.\u201d If the user is unable to verify account ownership within a certain timeframe, they will be asked to create a new account.<\/p>\n

Netflix\u2019s\u00a0terms of service state\u00a0that streaming content on the platform is \u201cfor your personal and non-commercial use only and may not be shared with individuals beyond your household.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company charges users\u00a0$8.99-17.99 per month, depending on the\u00a0plan. Netflix\u2019s basic plan allows users to stream on one screen at a time, while its\u00a0standard plan and premium plans allows users\u00a0to stream\u00a0on two screens at the same time and four screens at the same time, respectively.<\/p>\n

The move comes as the streaming giant has become more popular than ever,\u00a0surpassing 200 million subscribers.<\/p>\n

The streaming service has previously looked the other way when it comes to password sharing, with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings acknowledging\u00a0during a call with analysts in 2016\u00a0that it\u00a0is \u201csomething\u00a0you have to learn to live with.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s so much legitimate password sharing, like you sharing with your spouse, with your kids, so there\u2019s no bright line, and we\u2019re doing fine as is,\u201d Hastings said.<\/p>\n

But since those comments four years ago, Netflix has found more and more competition for viewers and dollars. In the last 24 months\u00a0App<\/a>leTV+,\u00a0Disney+, Discovery+ and\u00a0HBOMax\u00a0have all launched as pay streaming services. Just this week\u00a0CBS All Access became Paramount+\u00a0and in a twist actually lowered its monthly price by $1 with the name change.<\/p>\n

In 2019,\u00a0Netflix\u2019s chief product officer Gregory Peters\u00a0told\u00a0analysts during an earnings call\u00a0that the company was focused on preventing password sharing, but that the platform was still looking for ways to enforce it.<\/p><\/div>\n
