{"id":200337,"date":"2021-03-12T01:06:34","date_gmt":"2021-03-11T22:06:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/california-proposes-curriculum-on-aztec-gods\/"},"modified":"2021-03-12T01:06:34","modified_gmt":"2021-03-11T22:06:34","slug":"california-proposes-curriculum-on-aztec-gods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/california-proposes-curriculum-on-aztec-gods\/","title":{"rendered":"#California proposes curriculum on Aztec gods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#California proposes curriculum on Aztec gods<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The\u00a0California\u00a0Department of\u00a0Education\u00a0has proposed\u00a0an ethnic studies \u201cmodel curriculum\u201d\u00a0that includes, among other things,\u00a0chanting the names of\u00a0Aztec gods in an attempt to build unity among schoolchildren.<\/p>\n<p>Included in the draft curriculum is a list of \u201clesson resources\u201d with a chant based on\u00a0\u201cIn Lak Ech,\u201d which it describes as \u201clove, unity, mutual respect,\u201d and \u201cPanche Be,\u201d which it describes as \u201cseeking the roots of truth.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The chant starts with a declaration that \u201cyou are my other me\u201d and \u201cif I do harm to you,\u00a0I do harm to myself.\u201d Before chanting the name of the Aztec god\u00a0Tezkatlipoka, the text reads:\u00a0\u201cSeeking the roots of the truth, seeking the truth of the roots, elders and us youth, (youth), critical thinking through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It adds: \u201cTezkatlipoka, Tezkatlipoka, x2 smoking mirror, self-reflection Tezkatlipoka.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tezkatlipoka is the name of an Aztec god that was honored with human sacrifice. According to the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient.eu\/Tezcatlipoca\/\">World History Encyclopedia<\/a>, an impersonator of Tezkatlipoka would be sacrificed with his heart removed to honor the deity.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"563\" alt=\"California students to learn about Aztec gods.\" class=\"wp-image-17536295 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/california-students-aztec-god-03.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/california-students-aztec-god-03.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/california-students-aztec-god-03.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/california-students-aztec-god-03.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/california-students-aztec-god-03.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1729 1729w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>California Department of Education proposes curriculum on ethnic studies.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\"><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Youtube<\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Aztec mythology,\u00a0Tezkatlipoka is the brother of\u00a0Quetzalcoatl,\u00a0Huizilopochtli and\u00a0Xipe Totec \u2014 all of whom <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear to be invoked in the proposed chant.<\/p>\n<p>A portion read,\u00a0\u201cpulsating creation huitzilopochtli cause like sunlight, the light inside of us, in will to action\u2019s what brings\u2026 Xipe Totek, Xipe Totek, x2 transformation, liberation, education, emancipation. imagination revitalization, liberation, transformation, decolonization, liberation, education, emancipation, changin\u2019 our situation in this human transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0By_0Ed-W26_fajVCMHVTbnBYUXM\/view\">linked video<\/a>\u00a0showed what appeared to be students engaging in a unity chant with some of the language described.<\/p>\n<p>Another chant used the term \u201cHunab Ku,\u201d or \u201cOne-God,\u201d which Encyclopedia Brittanica identified as a Mayan deity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That portion of the chant read: \u201cwe\u2019re here to transform the world we\u2019re spiraling, rotating &amp; revolving in, giving thanks daily, tlazokamati, giving thanks daily, tlazokamati, healing &amp; transforming as we\u2019re evolving in this universe, universe, of Hunab Ku, Hunab Ku, x2 Nahui OlIin Lak Ech \u2013 Panche Beh, Ethnic Studies For All, Represent!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to CDE\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ca.gov\/ci\/cr\/cf\/esmcthirdfieldreview.asp\">website<\/a>, the school board is supposed to review a draft of the curriculum on March 17-18. CDE did not respond to Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>\u2019 request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Reported by Discovery Institute researcher Chris Rufo, the curriculum was just one of many diversity programs to gain attention in recent months. Much of its language and content bears resemblance to other programs that have been associated with critical race theory \u2014 a controversial way of analyzing identity that has been the subject of intense debate.<\/p>\n<p>The California\u00a0curriculum\u2019s introduction argued that the program would help marginalized groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy affirming the identities and contributions of marginalized groups in our society, ethnic studies helps students see themselves and each other as part of the narrative of the United States,\u201d it read. \u201cImportantly, this helps students see themselves as active agents in the interethnic bridge-building process we call American life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The guiding principles included goals including, \u201ccelebrate and honor Native People\/s of the land and communities of Black Indigenous People of Color.\u201d Another guiding principle read: \u201cCenter and place high value on the pre-colonial, ancestral knowledge, narratives, and communal experiences of Native people\/s and people of color and groups that are typically marginalized in society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The field of ethnic studies, it claimed, \u201ccritically grapples with the various power structures and forms of oppression that continue to have social, emotional, cultural, economic, and political impacts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The above chants were part of a list of instructional resources for educators to use in order to facilitate discussions about \u201crace, racism, bigotry, and the experiences of diverse Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"588\" alt=\"California students chanting.\" class=\"wp-image-17536225 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/california-students-aztec-god-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/california-students-aztec-god-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/california-students-aztec-god-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/california-students-aztec-god-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/california-students-aztec-god-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Students participate in Aztec chant.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Youtube<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The \u201cchants, affirmations, and energizers,\u201d the curriculum read, \u201ccan be used as energizers to bring the class together, build unity around ethnic studies principles and values, and to reinvigorate the class following a lesson that may be emotionally taxing or even when student engagement may appear to be low.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While some have praised these types of programs as a way to enhance racial understanding, others have been more critical.<\/p>\n<p>Williamson Evers, an Independent Institute senior fellow and\u00a0former assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Education, told Fox News that California\u2019s curriculum furthered a \u201cneo-racist ideology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re denying that the principles of America\u2019s founding \u2014 all men are created equal, they\u2019re endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights and so forth \u2014 that these principles can, through time, bring about human rights for all,\u201d he said Wednesday.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
