\n Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is coming down in favor of free speech, and good for him. Too bad other social-media honchos can\u2019t embrace the same principle.<\/p>\n

Zuck is refusing to follow Twitter and Snapchat in flagging or censoring President Trump\u2019s social-media posts, even after hundreds of his employees staged a virtual walk-out in protest.<\/p>\n

Last Friday, Twitter hid a tweet from Trump that included the phrase \u201cwhen the looting starts, the shooting starts\u201d behind a warning label citing a (rarely enforced) policy against \u201cglorifying violence.\u201d And Snapchat on Wednesday said it would no longer promote Trump\u2019s posts on its \u201cDiscover\u201d page \u2014 curated content from prominent accounts \u2014 because, well, he\u2019s Trump.<\/p>\n

Zuckerberg has plainly realized that he can\u2019t go down that road and still claim Facebook is a simple platform.<\/p>\n

So while he calls the prez\u2019s remarks \u201cdeeply offensive,\u201d Zuck says they don\u2019t violate Facebook\u2019s \u201cincitement to violence\u201d policy.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s better that people should be able to see and judge the words for themselves \u2014 Trump\u2019s words or any other politician\u2019s: \u201cWe should enable as much expression as possible unless it will cause imminent risk of specific harms or dangers spelled out in clear policies,\u201d the CEO said.<\/p>\n

Posted one disgruntled employee on LinkedIn, \u201cI\u2019m scared for my country, and I\u2019m watching my company do nothing to challenge the increasingly dangerous status quo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Actually, letting people read and judge for themselves is how we change the status quo in this democratic republic \u2014 not silencing someone just because someone else finds their words \u201coffensive.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
