\n If you\u2019re the type who likes to watch apocalyptic movies<\/a> and TV shows like \u201cContagion\u201d and \u201cThe Walking Dead,\u201d you might have an advantage over those who don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

A new study has found that fans of movies and shows featuring the likes of attacking zombies, aliens and infectious diseases cope better in times of crisis, including the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

Experts reckon they are more resilient and better prepared to deal with real-life emergencies like the one hitting the world today.<\/p>\n

Viewers can pick up tips on how to behave or react to situations such as panic buying, fake remedies and fear of others.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it\u2019s a good movie, it pulls you in and you take the perspective of the characters, so you are unintentionally rehearsing the scenarios,\u201d Coltan Scrivner, a University of Chicago researcher who specializes in morbid curiosity tells the Guardian. \u201cWe think people are learning vicariously. It\u2019s like, with the exception of the toilet paper shortage, they pretty much knew what to buy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He came to the conclusion after his fellow researchers quizzed 310 people about their movie preferences and viewing histories. They then asked them about how prepared they felt for COVID-19 and their experiences of anxiety, depression, irritability and sleeplessness.<\/p>\n

Those who were partial to horror app<\/a>eared less upset by the crisis than the majority, and the ones who enjoyed so-called \u201cprepper movies\u201d \u2014 where society collapses \u2014 ranked as more resilient and able to plan ahead, both in terms of mental and practical preparation.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve seen it a hundred times in the movies,\u201d Scrivner says, \u201cso it doesn\u2019t catch you off-guard so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mathias Clasen, a psychologist at Aarhus University and a co-author of the story, agrees.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019ve watched a lot of what we call prepper movies, you will have vicariously lived through massive social<\/a> upheavals, states of martial law, people responding in both pro-social and dangerously selfish ways to sudden catastrophic events,\u201d Clasen says.<\/p>\n

\u201cCompared to somebody who has never simulated the end of the world, you\u2019ll be in a better place because you have that vicarious experience.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
