Today, we\u2019re watching a video essay about the differing portrayals of Ripley in Alien <\/em><em>and Aliens.<\/em><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:post-content -->\n\n<!-- wp:separator {\"className\":\"is-style-wide\"} --><hr id=\"block-c4d05d38-52e3-42f8-8498-9277fd8f4a79\" class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/><!-- \/wp:separator --><!-- wp:paragraph --><p>There are a couple of sure-fire ways to start a fight amongst sci-fi fans. And one of them is bringing up Ellen Ripley (<strong>Sigourney Weaver<\/strong>) s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>ping down to her underwear at the end of <strong>Ridley Scott<\/strong>\u2018s <em><strong>Alien<\/strong><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>(1979).<\/p>\n<p>Within the context of the film, Ripley believes she has vanquished her titular foe. She exploded the <em>Nostromo<\/em>. The alien was on the <em>Nostromo<\/em>. Case closed. Finally able to catch her breath from the safety of the escape shuttle, she prepares for stasis. And, as we saw at the opening of the film, stasis is an underwear-only operation. Stripping down to a white camisole and a (pretty loose!) pair of briefs, Ripley slowly prepares herself for a long sleep through space. Only to discover \u2014 surprise! \u2014 the alien snuck aboard!<\/p>\n<p>The contention about the Ripley underwear affair boils down to whether or not you feel the scene objectifies its female subject. And there are good arguments to be made on both sides. On the one hand, rather famously, the character of Ripley was originally written as male. We also see the male crewmembers in <em>their\u00a0<\/em>underwear at the beginning of the film. On the other hand, you\u2019d be hard-pressed to describe the camera gazing on Ripley\u2019s exposed body as anything shy of leering. To argue that this is the alien\u2019s POV is a little\u2026strange.<\/p>\n<p>For Weaver\u2019s part, in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/alienseries.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/31\/interview-with-sigourney-weaver\/\">a 1981 interview for <em>Films and Filming<\/em>\u00a0magazine<\/a>, she argues that it was actually a cop-out to not have Ripley face the Alien on its own terms. Namely: butt naked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In any case, one person, in particular, did <em>not <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>reciate the fact that Ripley strips. And <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thechronicle.com.au\/entertainment\/movies\/james-cameron-says-sigourney-weaver-strip-in-alien-film-crossed-the-line\/news-story\/dfc04a5f9a98ad082a5c462760c680a5\">that person\u2019s name is <strong>James Cameron<\/strong><\/a>, director of <em><strong>Aliens<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(1986). The video essay below explores the differences between Scott and Cameron\u2019s respective characterizations of Ripley and how they navigate her gender.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the two films are playing in very different genre spaces (this is, in part, what makes <em>Aliens <\/em>such a great sequel).
