\nLook out, freeloaders: Netflix<\/strong> is cracking down on password sharing!<\/p>\n

In a new series<\/a> of tests, the streaming giant is rolling out a verification process to ensure users are actually logged into their own<\/em> account and not using Mom and Dad\u2019s for free shows (or the other way around. LOLz!). Womp, womp!<\/p>\n

The tech company is having a little fun with it, too. According to\u00a0GammaWire<\/em>, the verification process toys with the suspected freeloader, popping up a screen that reads:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you don\u2019t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Busted!<\/p>\n

The user then has the option of having a verification code sent via text or email \u2014 or they can \u201cverify later,\u201d though it\u2019s unclear how patient the company will be now that the process has started. FWIW, the streaming giant confirmed that they were rolling out the new verification feature in a chat with\u00a0People<\/em> on Thursday. A spokesperson for Netflix said (below):<\/p>\n

\u201cThis test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Netflix had been laid back about password sharing in the past. In 2016, CEO Reed Hastings\u00a0<\/strong>said users sharing account info with pals was \u201ca minor roadblock\u201d the company \u201chas to learn to live with.\u201d<\/p>\n
