“#UK lawmaker wants evening curfew for men following Sarah Everard\u2019s murder<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

A British lawmaker proposed a 6 p.m. curfew for men after a London woman was murdered while walking home at night \u2014 in a case that has rocked the country and sparked an intense debate about women\u2019s safety. <\/p>\n

Baroness Jenny Jones, a Green Party parliament member in the House of Lords, made the extreme suggestion Wednesday during a debate on the Domestic Abuse Bill.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the week that Sarah Everard was abducted, and we suppose killed because remains have been found in a woodland in Kent, I would argue that at the next opportunity for any bill that\u2019s app<\/a>ropriate I might actually put in an amendment to create a curfew for men on the streets after 6 p.m., which I feel would make women a lot safer and discrimination of all kinds would be lessened,\u201d Jones said, according to the Independent<\/a>. <\/p>\n

But Jones was quickly forced to explain her proposal was \u201cnot an entirely serious suggestion\u201d and not party policy after a deluge of criticism from constituents and fellow lawmakers alike.<\/p>\n

\u201cOMG the world is going mad. The greens are thinking about a curfew for men after 6pm at night \u2013 I\u2019ve heard it all now,\u201d Conservative leader Susan Hall tweeted<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Sky News Friday<\/a>, Jones clarified she was making a point about the victim-blaming women often face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just trying to highlight that when the police victim blame by asking women to stay home, we don\u2019t react. We just think it\u2019s normal,\u201d the lawmaker said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat in fact nobody makes a fuss when, for example, the police suggest women stay home. But when I suggest it, men are up in arms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everard, 33, vanished while walking home from a friend\u2019s house in Clapham, south London, last week. <\/p>\n

On Tuesday, London Police Officer Wayne Couzens \u2014 whose duties include protecting the royal family \u2014 was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, suspicion of murder and indecent exposure in connection with the case. <\/p>\n

A day later, human remains believed to be Everard\u2019s were discovered in a wooded area near Ashford, Kent.<\/p>\n

The innocent woman\u2019s death triggered an outpouring of anger over violence against women in the UK.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Jones said she welcomes the scrutiny over her \u201cproposal,\u201d and hopes it leads to a meaningful discussion about gender roles and public safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince my comments about a curfew for men to keep women safe, I\u2019ve had a deluge of misogynistic emails and tweets. Which rather proves my point about the problem being with men,\u201d the lawmaker tweeted<\/a> Thursday.\n <\/div>\n
